BMW Reveals iX4 Electric Coupe SUV: $66,200 Starting Price, 428 Miles of Range, March 2027 Sales Start

BMW Reveals iX4 Electric Coupe SUV: $66,200 Starting Price, 428 Miles of Range, March 2027 Sales Start
BMW has unveiled the iX4, a coupe-styled electric SUV priced from $66,200 before fees, with a claimed range of up to 428 miles. The 50 xDrive goes on sale in March 2027, and the 603-horsepower M60 follows later that year. Range and performance are strong, but a $66,200 sticker puts the iX4 well above the mass market.

BMW has pulled the covers off the iX4, a coupe-roofed electric SUV built on its Neue Klasse platform. The base iX4 50 xDrive starts at $66,200, excluding destination and handling fees, and is scheduled to reach the market in March 2027.

A higher-performance M60 xDrive is due later in 2027. Jalopnik puts that launch in late 2027, a few months after the 50 xDrive.

The numbers

The iX4 carries BMW's "Gen6" high-voltage battery, which holds 112.2 kWh of usable energy and runs on an 800-volt architecture for fast charging. The Verge reports a range of up to 428 miles on EPA estimates, more than the Tesla Model Y. Jalopnik, by contrast, says that figure is BMW's own estimate for the U.S. (see the range caveat below).

The 50 xDrive uses a dual-motor setup making 463 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque. BMW's figure for 0-60 mph is 4.7 seconds.

The M60 xDrive steps that up to 603 horsepower and 645 lb-ft. Its 0-60 time is a full second quicker than the 50 xDrive's; Jalopnik lists it at 3.9 seconds.

The rear axle uses an electrically excited synchronous motor, which energizes its rotor with electricity rather than permanent magnets. BMW says that design, paired with a redesigned inverter, cuts drive-system energy losses by 40 percent and weight by 10 percent.

On fast charging, the 800V architecture lets the iX4 accept up to 400 kW of DC fast charging, adding up to 184 miles of range in 10 minutes and going from 10 to 80 percent in 21 minutes.

Same body below the beltline

The iX4 is the coupe version of the iX3. It matches the iX3 in length, wheelbase and width, and shares its bumper and side skirt designs. The M Sport package is standard.

The difference is the roofline, which is more steeply raked than on any earlier BMW crossover coupe. BMW is also adding new colors, including Frozen Pure Red on the M60 shown in the launch photos.

The market logic is straightforward. BMW sold about 10,000 gas-powered X4s a year in the U.S. from 2021 through 2025, against about 70,000 X3s, according to Jalopnik. That is a niche, but a profitable-looking one, and BMW is betting its electric buyers want the same styling option.

Is the range the point?

The Verge frames the iX4 as BMW's answer to Chinese competition, and says BMW is positioning the Neue Klasse lineup as a defense against Chinese imports. The same piece concedes it is "unclear whether BMW can rival China in terms of sheer affordability." At $66,200 before fees, the iX4 is not aimed at the budget end of the market. The Verge also acknowledges that the Model Y beats the iX4 on price.

The Verge also notes that InsideEVs has questioned whether this much range is overkill. Tesla and others have sold plenty of EVs with ranges in the mid-300s, and Lucid has struggled despite topping 500 miles.

BMW is betting that range, efficiency and performance will carry the sale anyway.

The range figure itself comes with a caveat. The Verge describes 428 miles as an EPA-based estimate, while Jalopnik says BMW so far has only its own range estimates for the U.S. and that it is not yet known whether the iX4's sleeker roof improves on the iX3's range. Jalopnik notes the iX3 50 xDrive carries a 434-mile EPA range, so the iX4's 428-mile figure sits slightly below it for now.

The iX3 and i3 are the other Neue Klasse models already announced. Jalopnik counts the iX4 as the third production Neue Klasse model revealed, and notes the X5 shares the styling but not the platform.

What comes next

Jalopnik expects a full iX4 M later, sharing a quad-motor powertrain with the upcoming electric M3. BMW has not confirmed that in the material available.

The open question is the official EPA rating. When it is published, it will show whether the 428-mile claim holds, and by how much the iX4 beats the Model Y and other rivals in its price range.
