US Strikes Iranian Nuclear Site as War Enters Eighth Day, Iran Claims Drone Kill and Kuwait Attack

The US-Iran war that reignited last week hit a new escalation point Sunday, July 19, when Iran's Atomic Energy Organization accused American forces of striking the Darkhovin nuclear power plant, a facility still under construction in Khuzestan province.

The Iranian agency said the strike happened around 3:39 a.m. local time and called it "an aggressive and barbaric act in violation of international law," according to state broadcaster IRIB. The organization did not disclose the extent of any damage. The US has not confirmed hitting the site specifically.

The International Atomic Energy Agency said it is looking into the reports. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi's office noted the facility "is in the very early stages of construction and contained no nuclear material when last visited by the IAEA," and said the attack is not believed to pose any radiological risk. Grossi repeated his standing call for "military restraint in the vicinity of all nuclear-related sites."

An empty construction site is not a live reactor. Whatever the political fallout, there's no credible claim here of a radiological release, and readers should treat AEOI's "violation of international law" framing as Tehran's characterization, not an independent legal finding.

What US Central Command actually said

According to a statement from US Central Command, the latest wave of strikes began around 6 p.m. ET Saturday at President Trump's direction. Centcom said the mission was designed "to further degrade Iran's ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and swiftly punish Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces who launched attacks against American service members in Jordan last night."

Centcom said the targets were "Iranian military coastal surveillance and air-defense facilities." Iranian state media, via Mehr News Agency, said a strike hit near Sirik in southern Iran, and Tasnim News Agency reported a second strike near Shadegan, close to the Iraqi border. Neither Iranian outlet reported casualties or damage from those specific strikes.

Centcom's own language does not mention Darkhovin by name. Centcom has not publicly confirmed the Darkhovin strike as of Sunday, while Tehran has alleged it occurred.

The trigger: two dead Americans in Jordan

This latest round didn't come out of nowhere. Two US service members were killed and a third remains missing after an Iranian attack on a base in Jordan, reported a day before the Darkhovin strike. Iranian state TV claimed the Jordan attack destroyed at least two US fighter aircraft.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps also said Sunday it intercepted and destroyed a US MQ-9 Reaper drone over Ahvaz, according to Press TV. None of this has been independently verified by US officials in the sourcing available.

The retaliation is now regional

Iran responded to the Darkhovin strike report with a drone attack on US military assets in Kuwait, Iranian state TV said Sunday. Kuwait's army confirmed it intercepted Iranian missiles and drones both Saturday and again Sunday. Bahrain's air defenses also intercepted an Iranian attack Sunday, according to Bahrain state TV. No casualties or damage were reported in Kuwait or Bahrain.

Jordan saw its own scare Sunday. The US embassy in Amman said the international airport and seaport in Aqaba were evacuated over a "specific and credible threat." Jordanian authorities, however, said they'd detected no threats in the preceding hours and had not ordered any evacuation. The US embassy's public warning and the Jordanian government's own assessment directly contradict each other.

Iran's IRGC also announced Sunday it is continuing to blockade the Strait of Hormuz, the chokepoint through which roughly one-fifth of global oil supply flows, according to reporting carried by the New York Post.

The dead ceasefire

All of this traces back to the collapse of a Pakistan-brokered memorandum of understanding signed in mid-June, meant to end the war that started when the US and Israel struck Iran's nuclear and missile programs on February 28. Iran formally withdrew from that MoU over the weekend after the US resumed bombing.

Asked about Iran ditching the agreement, Trump gave a blunt answer in a phone interview with NewsNation, reported by Al Jazeera and Open Magazine: "I couldn't care less." He said the only objective that matters is "never allowing Iran to have a nuclear weapon."

Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei fired back in a statement carried by Iranian state media, saying US actions proved Trump's signature was "utterly worthless," according to Middle East Eye's reporting.

Turkey's foreign minister has since urged both sides to return to the US-Iran agreement and said Ankara is coordinating with Qatar, according to Anadolu Agency, which also reported Iran's claim that 50 people have been killed and more than 500 injured in US strikes since June 27. None of those casualty figures have been independently verified.

Fourteen US refueling aircraft have arrived in Israel amid the escalation, Anadolu reported, a logistical signal that Washington is not winding this down. Whether the Darkhovin strike gets an official US confirmation, and whether Grossi's IAEA team gets access to inspect the site, remain the two most immediate open questions.
