NYSE American Options Halts Trading on Two Systems, and Rival Exchanges Bypass Its Quotes

NYSE American Options suspended trading in a block of securities on Friday morning, Oct. 23, and rival exchanges responded by cutting it out of the price-matching chain.
The exchange, which is owned by Intercontinental Exchange, said on its status page that it had halted trading in all underlying symbols processed through transaction systems 4 and 6. Options on Apple, Chevron and Walt Disney were among those affected, according to the exchange's notification.
The exchange also said its first attempts to halt trading did not work. It said the suspension was still in progress when it posted its update.
Orders and quotes cancelled
NYSE American said it was cancelling all orders and quotes in the affected symbols, including good-till-cancelled orders. It published a separate list of the impacted instruments.
That means traders with standing orders in those contracts lost them and had to re-enter them once trading resumes. The exchange has not said when that will be.
Rivals declare self-help
NYSE Arca Options declared self-help and suspended routing to NYSE American Options as of 10:26 a.m. ET, according to the exchange's status page. Nasdaq said its six options exchanges declared self-help against NYSE American at 10:27 a.m.
Self-help is a safety valve in the order-protection rules that tie U.S. options markets together. Normally, an exchange cannot execute an order at a price worse than a better quote displayed on another exchange. If the venue showing that quote is malfunctioning, rivals can disregard its prices after following notification procedures.
The practical effect: the other exchanges kept processing orders without having to chase NYSE American's quotes, which could not be trusted to execute.
One venue of 20
This was not a market-wide shutdown. NYSE American is one of 20 U.S. options venues. It accounts for roughly 10% of multiply listed equity and ETF options volume. With more than 70 million equity options contracts changing hands on an average day, its typical share is around seven million contracts.
Because the same contracts list on multiple exchanges, brokers and market makers could keep trading them elsewhere. The competing-venue structure is built for this kind of failure.
Losing a venue still has a cost. Liquidity and competing quotes disappear from the consolidated market. For heavily traded contracts such as those on Apple, the depth on other exchanges is likely deep enough to absorb it. Thinly traded options can see fewer quotes and wider bid-ask spreads. How much that happened on Friday has not been reported.
A second problem this year
It is the venue's second reported technical problem in 2026. A March incident disrupted trading, post-trade processing and market data before NYSE American said all systems had been restored.
Friday's halt also came four days after NYSE American launched extended trading hours on Monday, Oct. 19, for options on 24 stocks and five ETFs. The exchange is competing with other U.S. venues for volume outside regular hours. NYSE has not said the launch and the outage are connected, and nothing reported so far establishes a link.
NYSE had not disclosed the cause of the failure in its initial notice. It also had not detailed which securities beyond those on its published list were affected.
What comes next
The open questions are specific. NYSE American has not said what failed in systems 4 and 6, when trading will resume in the affected symbols, or whether its extended-hours session for options remains on schedule. A written explanation of the cause, as with the March incident, would settle whether the two failures share a source.
