The Statement — And What It Isn't

Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei posted a written message Tuesday timed to the annual Hajj pilgrimage. Big threats. Zero public appearance.

According to Israel Hayom and the Jerusalem Post, Khamenei has not been seen in public since the United States and Israel launched Operation Roaring Lion. A written statement posted to his official X account is the extent of his visible presence.

Mainstream coverage is treating this like a normal war-time statement from a confident leader. It isn't. This is a written message from a man who hasn't shown his face since his country got hit.

What He Actually Said

The statement, reported across Breitbart, the Daily Mail, Israel Hayom, and the Jerusalem Post, was a rhetorical assault on the United States and Israel wrapped in religious language.

"Death to America and Death to Israel shall become the common chants of the Islamic ummah," Khamenei wrote, according to his official Farsi-language X account as cited by the Jerusalem Post.

He called Israel a "cancerous tumor" approaching "the final stages of their cursed demise." He recycled his father Ali Khamenei's decade-old prediction that Israel would not survive 25 more years — which now gives Israel roughly 15 years by his own math, according to the Jerusalem Post's James Genn.

He also declared that regional nations would no longer serve as "shields" for American military bases — a direct threat to U.S. installations in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan, per the Jerusalem Post.

The Iran Armed Forces Made It Worse

Alongside Khamenei's statement, Iran's armed forces spokesperson Brig. Gen. Abolfazl Shekarchi told Al Jazeera that Iran was "ready for war" and that any new U.S.-Israeli attack would bring a response "harder and more powerful" than anything seen so far, according to Israel Hayom.

Shekarchi also warned that Iran would prevent oil exports from the entire region if fighting resumed. That's a direct threat to global energy markets and U.S. allies who depend on Gulf shipping lanes.

Iran's military spokesperson is threatening to shut down oil exports from the Persian Gulf while ceasefire negotiations are supposedly happening.

The Ceasefire That Isn't

According to The Hill, a fierce spin war is underway with Trump and his allies publicly framing a peace agreement as imminent — even though no agreement has been reached and fresh U.S. strikes Monday night threw the entire process into question.

U.S. Central Command confirmed those Monday strikes targeted missile launch sites and vessels allegedly attempting to lay mines in the Strait of Hormuz, calling them "self-defense" operations. Iran's Revolutionary Guards called it a ceasefire violation and threatened a "devastating" response, according to Breitbart.

The U.S. is striking Iranian targets. Iran is calling it a ceasefire violation. Trump allies are telling the public a deal is days away. The new Supreme Leader — nowhere to be seen in person — is publishing "Death to America" statements.

The Central Question

Reason Magazine's editors Katherine Mangu-Ward, Nick Gillespie, and Matt Welch, along with The Gist's Mike Pesca, raised the central problem on their Tuesday podcast: does anyone in Washington have a coherent explanation for what the United States is actually trying to accomplish?

It's the only question that matters right now.

Is the goal a nuclear deal? Regime change? Degrading Iran's military capacity? Securing the Strait of Hormuz? Trump's stated rationale has shifted, according to Reason, and the foreign policy debates unfolding in real time look disturbingly similar to the early Iraq War arguments from two decades ago.

Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has reportedly clashed with the current Trump administration over the direction of the conflict, according to the Reason panel — suggesting this isn't even a unified Republican position.

Different Readings of the Same Facts

Left-leaning outlets are covering this as a reckless Trump war with no context for the genuine threat Iran poses. That's incomplete.

Right-leaning outlets are framing Khamenei's statement as proof the strikes are working and Iran is desperate. But a leader who won't show his face while threatening to choke off global oil supplies and vowing "Death to America" is an unpredictable adversary, not a defeated one.

What we know: the U.S. hit Iran hard. Iran's new supreme leader has gone to ground but is still swinging rhetorically. A ceasefire is being talked about but hasn't happened. Fresh strikes Monday are making the whole situation more volatile by the hour.

What This Means for Regular People

U.S. military bases in at least six Middle Eastern countries are now explicitly named as targets by Iran's supreme leader. Brig. Gen. Shekarchi's threat to block regional oil exports — if executed — would send gas prices in the United States spiking fast.

There are American service members stationed at those bases right now. There are American families watching their gas prices and 401(k)s.

The White House owes the public a straight answer on what winning looks like here. So far, nobody's given one.
