Ukrainian Drone Strikes Kill 8, Wound 60+ in Moscow and Tambov Regions, Russia Says

Eight people are dead and more than 60 wounded after Ukrainian drones struck multiple targets deep inside Russia overnight into Saturday, July 18, according to Russian officials cited by the Associated Press.

The strikes hit two massive warehouses belonging to Wildberries, Russia's largest online retailer. One warehouse is in Kotovsk, in the Tambov region, roughly 220 miles from the Ukrainian border. The other sits in Elektrostal, about 30 miles east of Moscow. Both caught fire.

Wildberries founder Tatyana Kim said Saturday morning the Kotovsk fire had been extinguished. Footage from Russian outlets showed the Elektrostal facility still burning, with smoke visible for miles.

Seven night-shift workers died at the Kotovsk warehouse and 25 more were wounded, according to Tambov regional governor Yevgeny Pervyshov. In the Moscow region, 37 people were wounded and one later died in the hospital, Moscow region governor Andrei Vorobyov said, bringing the confirmed death toll to eight.

A separate drone hit an oil depot in Noginsk, just north of Elektrostal, sparking a fire that forced evacuations of a nearby maternity hospital and a residential building, Vorobyov said. Drone debris also struck a kindergarten building in Elektrostal, though that fire has since been put out and no casualties from that specific impact were reported.

In Vladimir, about 115 miles east of Moscow, a drone hit a residential building and caused a brief fire, according to regional governor Alexander Avdeyev. No casualties were reported there.

Zelenskyy Confirms the Targets

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy posted on Telegram Saturday that Ukrainian forces struck two "significant logistical facilities in the Moscow and Tambov regions." He said the sites were used to supply "sanctioned components for the production of drones and navigation equipment," and that an oil facility was also hit.

Zelenskyy made a direct claim that the Wildberries warehouses weren't just e-commerce infrastructure, but were allegedly part of Russia's military supply chain. Zelenskyy did not provide documentation to back that specific claim in his post, and it has not been independently verified. Russian officials framed the strikes purely as attacks on civilian retail and energy infrastructure, without addressing Zelenskyy's sanctioned-components allegation.

Zelenskyy also said Ukrainian special operations forces conducted strikes on targets in the Sea of Azov and in Russian-occupied Ukrainian territory, though details on those operations were not disclosed.

Scale of the Overnight Barrage

Russia's Defense Ministry said its air defenses intercepted 379 Ukrainian drones overnight across 19 Russian regions, plus occupied Crimea, the Sea of Azov, and the Black Sea, according to the Associated Press. That number, if accurate, underscores how large-scale these drone campaigns have become on both sides of this war, now in its fifth year.

A reasonable skeptic would note Russia's interception claims can't be independently verified and have been inflated in past conflicts to downplay damage. But regional governors, who have no incentive to exaggerate strikes on their own territory, confirmed real casualties and real fires in multiple cities.
