Two Shot, One Detained After Reported Active Shooter at Houston-Area Mall

A juvenile was shot and hospitalized, and an adult bystander suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to a finger, after reports of an active shooter at Deerbrook Mall in Humble, Texas, Saturday evening, according to Humble Police Chief Chris Battenfield.

The Harris County Constable's Office Precinct 4 said deputies responded alongside Humble police just after 6:30 p.m. to the mall, located in the 20100 block of U.S. Highway 59, according to Fox News.

Battenfield said one person was detained. The juvenile's condition was not immediately known as of Saturday night. Police have not said whether charges have been filed against the person detained.

Battenfield told reporters at a Saturday evening news conference that the mall has been secured and there is no ongoing threat to the public. He said three officers were already stationed at the mall when the shooting happened, which he credited for the fast response.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office said deputies worked with partner agencies to secure the mall and asked the public to avoid the area and follow law enforcement instructions.

"At this time, one victim has been reported shot, and one person has been detained," the constable's office said in an initial statement. "Law enforcement officers remain on scene as the investigation continues."

Police scanner traffic indicated officers were clearing the mall and evacuating stores, though officials have not publicly confirmed those specific details, according to Fox News.
