Putin used the call to push his own narrative. Per Ushakov, the Russian president told Trump that "Russian armed forces are confidently advancing, liberating one settlement after another" and specifically cited the capture of the Ukrainian stronghold of Kostyantynivka as evidence. Putin also charged that Kyiv and its European allies are "betting on prolonging, and even escalating the conflict."

Zelenskyy's account was different in tone. Writing on X after his own call with Trump, the Ukrainian president said there is "a real prospect of ending this war" and that "America's determination will be crucial." He said the two agreed to meet in person at the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara.

Crimea Strike

Even as those calls were underway or concluding, a Ukrainian strike hit northern Crimea. Sergei Aksyonov, the Russia-installed governor of the region, posted on Telegram that one person was killed and two were injured, one seriously. He gave no details about the type of weapon used or the specific target.

In recent weeks, Ukraine has escalated long-range strikes on Crimean infrastructure, a deliberate strategy to isolate the peninsula that Russia seized and illegally annexed in 2014. Western analysts cited by AP News say Russian advances on the ground have slowed significantly, and Ukraine's ability to strike deep into Russian-held territory has added pressure on Moscow even as front-line movement has largely stalled.

What Each Side Is Claiming

The strongest case for the Russian position is straightforward: Putin says his forces are advancing, he says he prefers diplomacy on Russia's terms, and he says it's Kyiv and European capitals that are blocking a settlement. If accurate, that would mean the West is prolonging the war. That is Putin's framing, and it deserves to be stated plainly before scrutinizing it.

The problem is the sourcing. Every claim about Russian battlefield progress in Saturday's readout comes from Ushakov, a Kremlin official summarizing what Putin told Trump. There is no independent verification. Western analysts cited by AP and WSB-TV reach the opposite conclusion: Russian advances have "ground to a near halt." Zelenskyy's willingness to meet at NATO's summit does not suggest a leadership that believes it is losing.

The Diplomatic Structure

The dual-call format—Trump speaking to each leader separately rather than together—has been the consistent pattern this year. Witkoff serves as the administration's operational go-between. The Kremlin confirmed the envoy "stands ready to visit Moscow," which means no Moscow visit has yet been scheduled as of today, July 5.
