What Happened

At approximately 3:30 p.m. on Friday, May 22, 2026, firefighters responded to reports of two workers trapped in a confined space at a drydock facility on Richmond Terrace between Lockman and Andros Avenues in Mariners Harbor, Staten Island.

According to CBS News, crews arrived to find a fire burning in the basement of a metal structure at the rear of the shipping dock. Limited visibility. Heavy smoke. Two people trapped below ground.

About 50 minutes into the response, the building exploded.

The Casualties

One civilian worker is dead.

A second civilian was injured. At least 34 FDNY members — including firefighters, a fire marshal, and four medics — were also hurt, according to FDNY Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore, who spoke at the scene.

The fire marshal suffered the most severe injuries. According to the NY Daily News, he sustained a fracture to the right side of his skull and bleeding on the left side of his brain. As of Friday evening, he was intubated at Staten Island University Hospital in critical but stable condition. Doctors are monitoring for brain swelling over the next 24 hours.

Two additional firefighters were seriously injured — both stable, according to CBS News.

Why the Injuries Were So Severe

The fire marshal and the seriously injured firefighters were conducting searches inside a confined space when the explosion occurred.

A doctor who spoke at the briefing explained the physics, according to the NY Daily News: "Blast energy in a confined space can hit you and penetrate organs."

Confined spaces amplify and redirect explosive energy. These responders were conducting rescue operations in the exact worst location to be when the building exploded. They had no opportunity to escape.

The Response

Over 200 firefighters and emergency personnel from 68 units were deployed to the site, according to the NY Daily News. The fire reached two alarms before the explosion. It was placed under control at 7:20 p.m. — nearly four hours after the initial call.

FDNY Chief of Department John Esposito said at the scene: "Confined spaces are very dangerous operations for any rescuers. We had firefighters inside conducting searches and on top of the barge and adjacent to the barge. We had several that were injured."

Mayor Zohran Mamdani addressed the media at Staten Island University Hospital Friday evening, calling it "a complex, fast-developing emergency situation" and offering condolences to the family of the worker killed.

The injury numbers varied wildly across outlets as of Friday evening — BBC initially headlined 16 injured, Fox News reported 34, CBS reported 35, and the NY Daily News put it at 36 to 37. These discrepancies reflect the chaos of a fast-moving story, but news organizations that published low numbers without updating quickly did their readers a disservice.

BBC's headline — "Sixteen injured" — dramatically undercounted the actual toll even at the time of publication. News outlets that failed to verify injury counts created a factual gap that mattered when people were trying to understand the severity of what happened.

Fox News, for its part, had solid scene-level reporting but buried some of the medical detail about the fire marshal's specific injuries that the NY Daily News surfaced clearly.

The Bigger Picture

This is what first responders walk into — every single time. Confined spaces, unknown hazards, people trapped, smoke so thick you can't see your hand in front of your face — and then an explosion.
