Secret Service Investigates Iran-Linked Video That Names Melania and Barron Trump

Since Iran fired ballistic missiles at a US base in Jordan and briefly reignited the war after a days-long pause, a new front has opened: a video threatening the first lady and her son by name.

Tasnim, a news outlet affiliated with Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, published a video on its Telegram channel on July 28 titled "Where to Kill Melania?!" according to ZeroHedge, which cited reporting from The Epoch Times. The video shows footage of a motorcade and the first lady outside stores including Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue, and suggests those outings "could be suitable for operations by global freedom fighters," according to the New York Post as reported by Breitbart News. It also floats poisoning clothing with a nerve agent, per the Post's reporting.

Near the end, a voice says: "This is just the beginning. Barron Trump, wait for us," according to both ZeroHedge and Newsweek, which independently confirmed the same line through their own review of the material.

The Secret Service response

The Secret Service confirmed it is reviewing the video. Nate Herring, a lead public affairs specialist with the agency's Communications and Media Relations office, gave nearly identical statements to both The Epoch Times and Newsweek: "The Secret Service is aware of the video and investigates anything that can be perceived as a threat toward our protectees. Out of concern for operational security, we do not discuss matters of protective intelligence."

That statement is notable for what it doesn't say. Herring did not confirm the agency has identified a specific or credible threat, only that the material is under review. Newsweek's reporting notes the statement "does not indicate that the agency has identified a specific threat." That distinction matters given how much amplification a video like this can get regardless of whether it reflects an operational plan versus propaganda.

Both Melania Trump and Barron Trump, 20, receive full-time Secret Service protection, and their residences are under heightened security, according to the New York Post's reporting cited by Breitbart News.

Context that matters

This isn't the first time Tehran-linked messaging has targeted the Trump family. Billboards calling for Trump's death have appeared in Tehran in recent weeks, and mourners at Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's funeral procession carried banners calling for the president's assassination, according to ZeroHedge's sourcing. Newsweek frames the Melania video as a "notable expansion" of rhetoric that had mostly centered on Trump himself rather than his wife and son directly.

Trump has spoken publicly about being an assassination target well before this video surfaced. Trump downplayed the need for Netanyahu's briefing, saying, "I know exactly what's going on at Pickaxe, it's not a big problem. We took out their nuclear sites, and we'll have to take out Pickaxe if we don't make a deal. If we don't make a deal we'll take it out very easily," according to Breitbart News.

Trump also described Iran's military as gutted: "We pounded the hell out of them, and they had no Navy, they had no air force... their air defense, it's gone, all of their radar is gone, most of their weaponry is gone, most of their manufacturing is gone." That claim about the state of Iran's military hasn't been independently verified by battle-damage assessment reporting in these sources, and should be treated as Trump's characterization rather than a confirmed fact.
