Russian Soldier Kills Four in Shooting Spree at Crimean Military Base and Village

A Russian soldier opened fire on fellow servicemen and then turned his weapon on civilians in Russian-occupied Crimea, killing four people and wounding four others, according to Sevastopol Governor Mikhail Razvozhayev.

The shooting happened in the village of Khmelnytske, near Sevastopol. Razvozhayev said the attacker first shot at fellow soldiers, killing one and wounding another. He then allegedly opened fire on local residents, killing three civilians and wounding three more, according to Anadolu Ajansı.

The civilian victims were two men, ages 71 and 59, and a 64-year-old woman, Razvozhayev said. The Independent, citing the BBC, confirmed those ages and the death toll.

Razvozhayev said the attacker was detained. He gave no details on how or where the soldier was caught after the attack. The Moscow Times reported that a local chat group had warned residents the soldier fled into nearby woods after the initial shooting, before he was taken into custody.

No motive has been disclosed. Razvozhayev said in a Telegram post that "all circumstances and causes of the incident are being established" and urged residents not to spread rumors. He said medical staff were "doing everything possible to save" those wounded.

The Moscow Times, citing the exiled outlet Agentstvo, reported an unverified claim that the shooter was a 21-year-old man named Maxim Alistratov from Russia's Saratov region. That identification comes from a screenshot circulating in a local chat group and has not been independently confirmed by Russian authorities or by The Moscow Times itself.

Crimea has been under Russian control since Moscow annexed the peninsula from Ukraine in 2014, an act rejected by Ukraine and most of the international community as illegal. The peninsula hosts a heavy Russian military presence and has been a repeated target of Ukrainian drone and missile strikes throughout the war.

The Independent noted that Russian air defenses reportedly shot down 635 Ukrainian drones overnight on a recent Sunday, including strikes near Crimea and the Black and Azov Seas, though the Russian Defense Ministry did not disclose how many drones were launched in total. Ukrainian military activity or sabotage has not been connected to this shooting in available reporting. Authorities have described it strictly as an internal incident involving a Russian serviceman.
