Russian Missiles Kill Three in Kyiv Region Overnight as Ukraine Hits Two More Oil Refineries

Russia launched six ballistic missiles and 151 drones at Ukraine overnight into Saturday, August 8, killing at least three people in the Kyiv region, according to Tymur Tkachenko, head of the regional military administration. Two grandparents and their 3-year-old grandson died after drones destroyed their home in the Brovary district northeast of Kyiv, CBS News reported, citing local officials. Three other family members and a neighbor who tried to help were hospitalized.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said at least one more person died in Kyiv itself from what he called "a strike involving six ballistic missiles against civilian infrastructure." Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported fires across several districts, including one possibly involving fuel tanks, according to Bloomberg's reporting carried by Mint.

Ukraine's air force intercepted 135 of 151 drones overnight. It intercepted zero of the six ballistic missiles, according to Ukraine's General Staff. Ukraine's Defense Ministry said this past Tuesday that it managed to intercept only 29 of 195 ballistic missiles launched by Russia in all of July, per Bloomberg's reporting.

Patriot systems are the only weapon in Ukraine's arsenal capable of shooting down ballistic missiles, and Ukraine is running low on interceptors. New shipments from allies have not kept pace with what Russia is throwing at Kyiv, Bloomberg reported. Zelenskyy has pushed the U.S. and other allies to send more ammunition, floated producing Patriot interceptors inside Ukraine, and asked for permission to use Elon Musk's Starlink network to guide strikes on Russian missile launchers.

After the latest barrage, Zelenskyy posted on X calling for more sanctions to "prevent the production of these ballistic missiles," along with more "anti-ballistic capabilities" and "interceptor missiles." Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Russia also hit a passenger train in the Sumy region overnight, with additional strikes in Chernihiv and Dnipro. "We urge partners to take concrete steps to strengthen Ukraine's sky shield and increase the cost of prolonging this war for Moscow," Sybiha wrote on X.

Ukraine's General Staff said its forces struck the Ilsky refinery in Russia's Krasnodar Krai and the Syzran refinery in Samara Oblast on the night of August 7 into 8, sparking fires at both. The General Staff also said it hit a Russian surveillance post on the Syvash drilling platform in the Black Sea, used by Russian forces to house monitoring equipment.

Ilsky has an annual processing capacity of roughly 6.6 million tonnes of crude, and its output helps supply the Russian military, according to Ukraine's General Staff. Syzran can process about 8.5 million tonnes a year. Both plants have been hit before. Bloomberg noted Ilsky was struck as recently as July, calling it a recurring target since the early phase of Kyiv's campaign against Russian energy infrastructure.

Russian officials gave a different account of the damage. A regional task force in Krasnodar said the fire at Ilsky was sparked by falling Ukrainian drone debris, not a direct hit, and that it injured five people. In Samara, Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev said an unspecified "industrial enterprise" was struck, declining to confirm it was the Syzran refinery, even as social media videos purported to show a fire near the site.

Russia's Defense Ministry claimed it shot down 397 Ukrainian drones overnight and another 83 Saturday morning. It also said it struck a fuel depot in Kyiv and a plant manufacturing parts for Ukraine's Flamingo missile program.

None of these figures, from either side, can be independently verified. Bloomberg was explicit that it could not confirm Russia's claimed interception numbers, and Ukraine's own damage assessments at the refineries were still underway as of Saturday. Both governments have obvious incentives to inflate their own defenses and their opponent's losses, and neither claim should be taken as final.

Russia has consistently said it targets only military infrastructure. The scale of civilian casualties in residential districts of Brovary and Kyiv, and the routine hitting of apartment buildings and passenger trains, makes that claim hard to square with the pattern of strikes documented by CBS News, Bloomberg, and Ukraine's own military reporting.

The open question is whether Western allies move faster on Patriot interceptor production and delivery. Zelenskyy has been asking publicly for months. With Ukraine stopping roughly one in seven ballistic missiles in July and zero of six overnight into August 8, the gap between what Kyiv needs and what it's getting is not closing.
