Russian Drone Hits Ukrainian Train Minutes After Boris Johnson, Petraeus and European Officials Passed Through Border Station

Since Russia's overnight barrage of more than 450 drones and missiles across Ukraine on Sunday, Sept. 13, the strike that hit a train locomotive at Yahodyn station, about 1.2 miles from the Polish border, has drawn particular attention. A trainload of Western dignitaries had passed through the same station roughly an hour earlier, and a former CIA director was still standing on the platform when the drone hit.

Ukraine's air force said it intercepted 405 drones and four missiles that night, according to The Guardian. The Financial Times reported Russia had fired 863 drones and missiles the night before, on Saturday. At least six people were killed and more than 40 injured in the broader barrage, according to The Guardian.

Who Was Where, When

A diplomatic train carrying former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt, UK national security adviser Jonathan Powell, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's adviser Günter Sautter, Italian national security adviser Fabrizio Saggio, and German Green Party MP Robin Wagener left Yahodyn earlier than scheduled and had already crossed into Poland by the time the drone struck, according to Ukraine's state railway operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, and confirmed by CNN and the World Socialist Web Site. The group had just attended the Yalta European Strategy security conference in Kyiv.

Former CIA Director David Petraeus was on a third train that had also passed through Yahodyn. Ukrzaliznytsia said he was evacuated roughly 15 minutes before the locomotive was hit and was still sheltering at the station when the explosion happened. Petraeus told The New York Times he could hear the drones overhead before the blast. "For those who have not been under fire, this was terrifying," he said, calling it "the act of a truly barbaric leader trying to terrorize Ukrainian civilians."

The train that was actually struck was carrying 206 passengers who had already been evacuated after Ukrzaliznytsia's monitoring team flagged the incoming drone, according to the Kyiv Post. No one was hurt. A separate drone hit a truck about 800 meters from the Yahodyn-Dorohusk border crossing, setting vehicles ablaze near a gas station, per CNN and the Kyiv Post.

Two Competing Explanations, Neither Confirmed

Ukrzaliznytsia said it is "quite likely" the diplomats' train was the actual target, since it had departed early specifically because of schedule adjustments made in response to the constant threat of Russian strikes. Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called the strike "Putin's terror 'knocking' directly on the doors of the EU and NATO," per CNN and the Kyiv Post.

Russia's Defense Ministry did not deny carrying out the strike. It said, per Russian state agency TASS as cited by the World Socialist Web Site, that its forces hit "railway infrastructure facilities in western Ukraine that are used to transport military cargoes from European countries." That is a different claim from Ukraine's. Moscow says it targeted a supply line, not a diplomatic delegation. Neither government has produced evidence proving intent one way or the other, and Ukrzaliznytsia itself used the word "likely," not "confirmed." The World Socialist Web Site also noted the broader context Moscow points to: months of Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries and energy infrastructure that Russia has cited in justifying its own campaign against Ukrainian rail and border crossings.

Coverage Divergence

Breitbart's headline described Johnson as having been "evacuated from train after strike," but its own reporting, along with CNN's, the Guardian's and the Kyiv Post's, establishes that Johnson's train had already crossed into Poland before the locomotive was hit. He was woken by guards after a different train down the line was struck, not evacuated from the scene of the blast itself. The Epoch Times' framing that the drone hit "just moments after" the dignitaries disembarked similarly compresses a timeline that Ukrzaliznytsia put at roughly an hour for the diplomatic train and about 15 minutes for Petraeus's train.

What Comes Next

Johnson used the incident to renew his call for European governments to unlock frozen Russian assets, citing roughly 140 billion euros held in Belgium and about 10 billion pounds in London, and to press for more air defenses for Ukraine. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk had warned days earlier, on Thursday, that Russia could escalate attacks on border crossings the way it has near Moldova. Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski called the strike "an escalation" with implications beyond Ukraine's borders, speaking from Kyiv. Poland scrambled fighter jets as a precaution but reported no incursion into its airspace. No formal NATO response or investigation into the strike's intended target has been announced as of Sept. 15.
