Possible Human Remains Found at Spokane Home After Resident Refused Wildfire Evacuation Order

The Upriver Fire started June 16 in Spokane County, Washington. The blaze has burned over 200 acres and destroyed 12 homes along Upriver Drive, north of the Spokane River, according to the NY Post citing Northeast Washington Fire Information.

As of Thursday morning, the fire stood at 217 acres and was 10% contained, per Northeast Washington Fire Information.

On the evening of June 16, a family member contacted authorities to request a welfare check. They couldn't reach a relative who had refused to evacuate despite a Level 3 Evacuation Alert, the highest level, meaning leave immediately.

The Spokane County Sheriff's Office says deputies were already in the area responding to a separate fully-engulfed home nearby. They went door-to-door, then entered the residence through an unlocked front door and announced the urgent need to evacuate. No one responded. Moments later, deputies were ordered to pull back themselves as the fast-moving fire closed in.

On June 17, detectives, fire investigators, and forensics personnel returned to the property. They found what appeared to be human remains inside the destroyed home, according to the Spokane County Sheriff's Office.

No identification has been publicly confirmed. The case is under investigation.

Governor Bob Ferguson addressed the discovery on Facebook: "My prayers are with the family of an individual who is presumed dead as a result of the Upriver Fire. This has been a devastating fire for this community. I am grateful for responders who evacuated hundreds and are working to contain the fire."

First responders executed an extensive door-to-door effort before the fire overran the neighborhood. According to the Sheriff's Office, deputies evacuated hundreds of residents in the surrounding area. An ongoing response involving local and state fire crews, engines, and aircraft remains underway as firefighters work to contain the destructive wildfire and protect threatened communities in Spokane County.

The strongest argument against criticizing the resident's choice is one of individual liberty: adults have the legal right to remain on their own property, and not every refusal to evacuate ends in death. Firefighters cannot compel removal in most circumstances, and some residents who shelter in place do survive. Critics of aggressive government intervention argue that mandatory evacuations can themselves impose real costs on people, economic, logistical, and personal, and that individual judgment deserves respect.

That concern is legitimate. But Level 3 orders exist because fire behavior at that stage outpaces any individual's ability to respond. Deputies entered that home, announced themselves, and got no answer. They tried. The timeline here—a welfare check requested by family, an unlocked door, no response, fire closing in within minutes—does not suggest a resident who made a calculated stand. It raises the possibility that the person was already incapacitated before the fire arrived. Investigators have not said either way.

The Spokane County Sheriff's Office has not announced identification of the remains or a cause of death. Forensic investigation is ongoing. Until that process concludes, whether this death resulted from the fire itself, a medical emergency, or another cause is an open question the sourced facts cannot answer.
