One Dead, Seven Wounded After Gunfire Sends 300 Fleeing a Morgan Hill Party

One person is dead and seven others wounded after gunfire erupted at a large, unsanctioned party in Morgan Hill, California, Saturday night. The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office says no arrests have been made.

Deputies were first sent to Hale and Miramonte avenues around 10:15 p.m. for a routine disturbance call, intoxicated people in the street, someone throwing a bottle at a passing car, according to the sheriff's office. What they found instead was, in the words of spokesperson Brooks Jarosz, a "chaotic scene."

More than 300 people were fleeing the area after shots rang out. First responders located multiple gunshot victims. One person was pronounced dead at the scene. The rest were taken to hospitals.

The sheriff's office initially told reporters eight people had been shot, including the person killed. That number was later revised down to seven total gunshot victims, according to CBS News. All of the victims are adults.

Investigators say the gathering was an "unsanctioned party" that organizers promoted through social media, drawing a crowd that overwhelmed the small residential intersection where it was held. A reunification area was set up nearby so families and friends separated in the chaos could find each other.

What Investigators Know So Far

The sheriff's office says preliminary evidence points to a handgun as the weapon used. Detectives believe the shooting was an isolated incident, not connected to any broader threat, though they have not identified a shooter or shooters as of Sunday.

"This tragic and senseless violence is entirely unacceptable," Sheriff Robert Jonsen said in a statement carried by both the Los Angeles Times and CBS News. "Our hearts go out to the victim's family, those recovering from their injuries and everyone in our community affected by this traumatic event. We will work tirelessly until those responsible for this horrific act are identified, apprehended, and held fully accountable."

The sheriff's office says it expects the investigation to be "lengthy and complex." Given the scale of the crowd, that's realistic. Three hundred people scattering in the dark after gunfire creates a messy scene, conflicting accounts, and a shrinking pool of witnesses willing to come forward.

Four agencies responded and assisted: the Morgan Hill Police Department, Gilroy Police Department, California Highway Patrol, and San Jose Police Department. They handled first aid, scene security, traffic control, and investigative work, according to the sheriff's office.
