Nvidia Chip Made in March 2025 Found in Russian Cruise Missile, Ukraine Says

Ukraine's Main Directorate of Intelligence, known as HUR, says it recovered an Nvidia Jetson Orin NX computer module from the wreckage of a Russian S-71M "Monochrome" cruise missile. The finding was published on the agency's War & Sanctions portal on August 12, 2026, according to Crypto Briefing and Tom's Hardware. The chip carries a manufacturing marking that dates it to March 2025.

Nvidia formally exited the Russian market in 2022 after Washington imposed sweeping export controls on semiconductors following the invasion of Ukraine. A chip packaged in early 2025 turning up in a missile recovered roughly a year and a half later means it traveled from factory to battlefield through channels that are, at minimum, still open.

The Jetson Orin NX is not exotic hardware. It's a commercial system-on-module built for robotics and edge computing, priced around $600, according to gadgetsnow.indiatimes. It packs 1,024 CUDA cores, 32 Tensor cores, and up to 157 sparse INT8 TOPS of AI performance, per specs cited by Tom's Hardware. For a missile's terminal guidance system, this profile is ideal. Ukrainian officials say the module likely serves as the compute engine behind an electro-optical perception system, paired with a Chinese-made Honpho TS130C-01 camera module, allowing the S-71M to visually identify and track targets in the final seconds of flight. The missile itself has a range of roughly 300 kilometers and carries a 250-kilogram warhead, and Ukrainian intelligence says it's designed for launch from Su-57 fighters or S-70 Okhotnik drones, according to Militarnyi reporting cited by Tom's Hardware and UNN.

This isn't an isolated incident. Ukrainian forces previously found the same Jetson Orin family inside Russian Shahed MS001 and V2U attack drones in 2025, according to Crypto Briefing. Nvidia's response and the export control gap

Nvidia isn't denying the chip is real. A company spokesperson told Tom's Hardware that Jetson Orin modules "are consumer-grade products sold to students, developers, and startups" and "are not available in Russia and are not designed for military purposes." The spokesperson added that pre-owned Jetsons circulate through resale channels Nvidia cannot track, and that the company will act if it identifies customers violating export controls.

Nvidia doesn't sell directly to Russia, and a company has limited ability to police a global secondhand market once a chip leaves its authorized distribution chain. The real question is whether the U.S. export control regime, and the countries enforcing it, are doing enough to close the resale loopholes that let a chip move from a legitimate buyer to a Russian weapons plant in about a year.

U.S. officials have previously flagged Turkey, the UAE, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan as likely transshipment points for sanctioned tech reaching Russia, according to Crypto Briefing. Fox News reported that drone and missile executives on both sides are now being targeted for assassination, including an August 4 car bombing near Yekaterinburg that critically injured Uraldronzavod chief Vladimir Tkachuk and killed his driver, according to Russian state agency TASS via the Associated Press. President Volodymyr Zelensky told CNN that Ukraine now has two and a half times fewer interceptors than in 2025 while Russia has doubled its ballistic missile stock.

The chip leakage, the executive assassinations, and the interceptor shortage are parallel and simultaneous pressures on the same war.
