NetJets Cessna Citation Crashes on Laredo Highway, Kills 1 and Injures 5 on Board

What Happened

A Cessna 680 Citation Latitude registered N523QS, operated by NetJets and owned by a Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary, crashed onto Loop 20 in Laredo, Texas, at approximately 10 p.m. local time on Tuesday, June 16, 2026. Six people were aboard. One was pronounced dead at the scene. The other five were transported to local hospitals and reported in stable condition, according to Laredo International Airport Director Gilberto Sanchez, who spoke to CBS News.

Laredo Police Department investigator Jose Baeza confirmed the crash location as the Loop 20 stretch near the Saunders Street and Clark Boulevard intersection. The aircraft also struck at least one vehicle on the highway. That driver was injured but in stable condition, according to Aviation Today and reporting from Laredo Morning Times cited by IBTimes Singapore.

The Flight Path

According to Private Jet Card Comparisons and flight-tracking data cited across multiple outlets, N523QS had a full day of flying before the crash. It departed Denver at 10:21 a.m. Mountain Time, flew to Scottsdale, then to Ensenada, Mexico, and arrived in Los Cabos at 4:05 p.m. Mountain Time. It took off from Los Cabos bound for Austin, Texas, at 6:19 p.m.

Somewhere on that final leg, the crew reported mechanical problems and low fuel, according to Airport Director Sanchez. The flight was diverted to Laredo International Airport. At 9:58 p.m., the airport received an alert that the Cessna Citation was experiencing mechanical issues. The aircraft then lost communication with the tower and crash-landed a few minutes later, approximately two and a half miles short of the runway, according to flight-tracking data cited by Aviation Express.

NetJets confirmed to Fox News that the aircraft was part of its fleet. The company did not provide additional detail on the cause of the emergency.

The Crash Scene

Dashcam footage posted to social media, described by CBS News, showed the jet careening down the highway, clipping a light post before coming to rest on its side against a highway barrier. The tail section was sheared from the fuselage and came to rest on a lower roadway beneath the main crash site. The fuselage caught fire.

Witness Zayra Garza, an esthetician who was driving co-workers home, described seeing the aircraft on fire and someone inside trying to break the cockpit window from within. "It looked like part of a movie. I was in shock," she told the Associated Press, as reported by IBTimes Singapore and CBS News. Her husband exited their vehicle to help.

Two bystanders arrived on foot carrying a sledgehammer and shovel, which they used to strike the cockpit glass and try to pry open the door, according to CBS News and multiple other outlets. Garza said three people who appeared to be teenagers emerged first, followed by someone who looked like a pilot. A crew member was separately seen dragging an unconscious person away from the wreckage, according to Aviation Express.

Five Laredo Police Department officers were hospitalized for smoke inhalation sustained during the rescue effort. Firefighters later used a ladder to enter the aircraft and help remove remaining occupants.

The Investigation

Both the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have opened investigations. The FAA confirmed to CBS News that the NTSB will take the lead.

Investigators are expected to examine flight data recorders, maintenance records, and the communications between the crew and air traffic control before contact was lost. Aviation Express reported that preliminary flight-tracking data showed the aircraft descending rapidly and at unusually low ground speed in the moments before impact.

The identity of the person killed has not been released pending family notification, according to Laredo Police investigator Baeza.

A Rare Fatality for Fractional Operators

Private Jet Card Comparisons, which covers the fractional ownership industry, noted that this is the first fatal accident involving the fractional ownership unit of Berkshire Hathaway, and that there had been no U.S. fatal accident for a Part 91k fractional operator since at least 2006, citing previous reporting by Aviation International News. The 2016-model Citation Latitude had been in service for roughly a decade before Tuesday night.

Loop 20 remained closed in both directions Wednesday as crews extinguished remaining hotspots and secured the wreckage, according to Aviation Express.

The NTSB investigation's first formal findings, typically a preliminary report issued within roughly 30 days, will be the first hard look at whether the mechanical issue, fuel state, or something else drove the crew's decision-making in the final minutes of that flight.
