Lebanon Health Ministry Puts Israeli-Attack Death Toll at 8,920 Since October 2023 as Sunday Strikes Kill Four More

Since Israel intensified its air campaign in Lebanon on March 2, 2026, following a Hezbollah rocket attack on northern Israel, the cumulative death toll has climbed to 8,920 people killed and 30,595 wounded going back to October 2023, according to Lebanon's Ministry of Public Health. Four more people died Sunday, September 6, in a fresh round of dawn strikes.

What happened Sunday

Israeli air attacks hit Nabatieh, Arab Salim, Nabatieh al-Fawqa and Kfar Reman before sunrise, Lebanon's National News Agency (NNA) reported, according to Al Jazeera. Two women were killed and six people wounded in Arab Salim, after Israeli forces had issued a forced-displacement order for a building in the town. The Health Ministry separately reported at least two deaths in Nabatieh al-Fawqa.

A strike on Nabatieh city destroyed a historical building owned by the brother of a Lebanese member of parliament and damaged nearby structures. In Kfar Reman, an air attack destroyed the home of the town's late former mayor. Five people were treated at Nabatieh hospitals and discharged. Another strike hit the Sayyida Masouma Garden, finishing off what remained of the municipal park after it was struck the previous day.

Israel said the strikes were retaliation for Hezbollah launching two drones at its forces operating inside the security zone in southern Lebanon, calling it a "blatant violation," according to Al Jazeera. That is Israel's stated justification; no independent verification of the drone launch has been reported in these sources.

Cumulative toll

The Health Ministry's cumulative count has moved in recent weeks: Xinhua reported 8,915 killed and 30,543 wounded as of August 21, and by the ministry's Saturday statement the total had risen to 8,920 killed and 30,595 wounded, with figures varying slightly by outlet (L'Orient-Le Jour cited 30,559 wounded through September 1). Of that total, 4,358 deaths and 12,359 injuries have been recorded since March 2 alone, the ministry said.

Those figures come from a Lebanese government ministry, not an independent international tally, and should be read as the Lebanese state's official accounting rather than a verified neutral count. The UN's refugee agency UNHCR, a separate source, said roughly 360,000 people remained displaced in Lebanon as of August, including at least 22,000 living in collective shelters.

The Health Ministry also reported 179 attacks on ambulance crews since March 2, killing 135 healthcare workers, a figure carried by Al Jazeera, teleSUR and others.

Two agreements, one that Hezbollah rejects

Israel and Lebanon signed a framework agreement in Washington in late June, and the two countries have since held negotiations in Rome, most recently an August round aimed at implementing security arrangements along the border, according to Xinhua. But the framework was contingent on Hezbollah's disarmament, and Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem has called it "null and void," demanding Israel end its occupation of southern Lebanon first. The agreement did not require an Israeli troop withdrawal.

Israel has maintained forces inside a self-declared "security zone" roughly 10 kilometers deep in southern Lebanon since March, when it announced the buffer zone. L'Orient-Le Jour put the occupied area at more than 600 square kilometers.

Where coverage splits

Outlets describe the same events in noticeably different language. RTE.ie led with the Israeli military's own account, that "terrorists from the Hezbollah terrorist organisation launched two drones towards IDF soldiers operating in the Security Zone." Al Jazeera, describing the same period, called it "Israel's latest intensification of its war on Lebanon." Neither framing is independently adjudicated in these sources, and both trace back to statements from an interested party, either the Israeli military or the Lebanese government.

Israel's position, that the strikes are a direct response to Hezbollah drone launches against its troops in the zone it controls, is the strongest case for the campaign's legality as self-defense against an armed group Israel and the United States both designate a terrorist organization. Lebanon's government counters that Israeli forces are occupying its territory beyond what any signed agreement authorized, and that strikes on ambulance crews, historical buildings and a municipal park go well beyond targeting Hezbollah fighters.

What's next

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has urged Washington to intervene to stop what L'Orient-Le Jour described as a "dangerous escalation," though no US response beyond the existing June framework and August Rome talks has been reported. Whether a further round of negotiations produces an actual troop withdrawal, or whether daily strikes and shelling continue alongside them, remains unresolved as of this weekend.
