Gorka's Counterterrorism Record Under Fire: 177 Kill Claims, No Published Strategy, and a High-Profile Resignation

Gorka's Counterterrorism Record Under Fire: 177 Kill Claims, No Published Strategy, and a High-Profile Resignation
Sebastian Gorka is making big claims — 177 jihadis killed in one weekend, 106 American hostages freed — but ProPublica reports he still hasn't produced a national counterterrorism strategy after more than a year in office. Meanwhile, Joe Kent just resigned as National Counterterrorism Center director, calling the Iran war unjustified. The gap between the PR offensive and the policy paper is impossible to ignore.

The Numbers Are Big. The Strategy Document Is Missing.

Sebastian Gorka, Deputy Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Counterterrorism on the National Security Council, went on Breitbart's Alex Marlow Show this weekend and dropped headline numbers.

177 jihadis killed in a single weekend. Gorka called it "the biggest counter terrorism operation since September the 11th," according to Breitbart. He also claimed 106 American citizens have been liberated and brought home in the last 15 months under President Trump — a record, he says.

Those are serious claims. They deserve serious scrutiny.

ProPublica Says Verify First

ProPublica, in a detailed investigative piece, asked the obvious follow-up question: how do you verify any of this?

Current and former national security officials told ProPublica that Gorka's kill-count claims are "overstated or hard to verify." The intelligence community's own people are raising questions.

Worse yet, ProPublica reports Gorka has been promising a national counterterrorism strategy since roughly two years ago. In mid-2024 it was "imminent." By July it was coming "on the cusp." Same phrase in October. Same phrase again in January 2025.

We are now well into 2026. No strategy has been published. No explanation given for the delay.

You can kill 177 people in a weekend and still lose a war if you don't have a plan.

The Joe Kent Resignation Blows Everything Up

The biggest new development isn't the kill count. It's the resignation of Joe Kent as director of the National Counterterrorism Center.

Kent walked out and, according to the Council on Foreign Relations transcript of a March 19, 2026 event, wrote in his resignation letter that "Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation, and it is clear that we started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby."

Gorka's response at the CFR event, moderated by PBS NewsHour's Nick Schifrin, was scorched earth. Gorka said he left Kent a voicemail calling him "an utter disgrace to the uniform you once wore, to the republic for which it stands."

Gorka also pointed out that Kent said "the exact opposite" of his resignation letter just weeks earlier — arguing either Kent lied then, lied now, or wasn't in the rooms where the real intelligence was presented.

It's a fair point. It's also the kind of public brawl that raises questions about the coherence of the administration's counterterrorism apparatus.

The Tucker Carlson Spat Is a Distraction

Also this weekend, Gorka took a shot at Tucker Carlson on the Marlow show, accusing Carlson of mocking the concept of "Islamic jihad" for clicks and clickbait. Gorka said, "I think we know what it's about. It's not about the truth or the American way. It's about clicks and clickbait," according to Breitbart.

This is a conservative-on-conservative fight. It's also largely irrelevant to whether American counterterrorism policy is working.

Media note: Breitbart ran three separate Gorka-favorable segments from one radio appearance. That's amplification, not journalism. The CFR transcript and ProPublica's reporting give a far more complete picture — and a far less flattering one.

The Threat Environment Is Not Waiting for the Plan

ProPublica documented what March 2025 actually looked like on the ground: a gunman in an Iranian-flag shirt killed three people at a Texas bar. Homemade explosives went off outside the New York City mayor's mansion. A deadly shooting hit a Virginia college campus on March 12. A car-ramming at a Michigan synagogue happened the same afternoon. Federal agents arrested a man threatening a mass shooting at an Ohio mosque days later.

All of that happened while the national counterterrorism strategy remained unpublished.

Current and former officials told ProPublica the Trump administration's mass deportation campaign has been pulling counterterrorism resources in a different direction. With an active conflict involving Iran — a sophisticated state sponsor of terrorism — those officials say the agencies have "hemorrhaged expertise" at exactly the wrong moment.

What the Hudson Institute Told Us in August 2025

Back in August 2025, Gorka spoke at the Hudson Institute alongside Senior Fellow Michael Doran about "the evolving global terrorist threat" and the future of U.S. counterterrorism strategy. That was a think-tank conversation, not a published strategy. Another forum. Another discussion.

The pattern is consistent: Gorka talks — at Hudson, at CFR, on Breitbart radio — but the governing document never appears.

The Record So Far

Gorka may well be telling the truth about 177 kills and 106 hostages. Those would be genuinely significant achievements. But without an independently verified strategy and with the National Counterterrorism Center director having just quit in open revolt, announcements on partisan radio don't provide sufficient accountability.

Regular Americans deserve more than kill-count announcements. They deserve a published plan, verifiable numbers, and a leadership team that isn't publicly detonating on each other.

The claims are getting bigger. The receipts still aren't here.
