Ex-Marine Arrested at Trump's California Golf Course Had Melania Trump's Schedule, 208 Pages of Notes on Secret Service

A former U.S. Marine arrested outside President Trump's Rancho Palos Verdes golf course earlier this month had detailed schedules for first lady Melania Trump and members of the president's Secret Service detail in his possession, according to court testimony reported by the Associated Press, The Independent, Courthouse News Service, and MEAWW News.

Jeanine John Taele, 38, of Downey, California, was arrested Aug. 2 after federal agents spotted him on the grounds of Trump National Golf Club Los Angeles, taking photographs and video and appearing to monitor Secret Service activity ahead of a presidential visit for a Republican National Committee dinner, according to the AP. He was reportedly wearing an earpiece and a badge reading "security protection agent."

Deputies found a 16-round magazine loaded with hollow-point ammunition in his pocket, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. A search of his pickup truck turned up a loaded 9mm pistol with a round in the chamber, binoculars, and a second magazine of hollow-point rounds.

A follow-up search of Taele's Downey residence, according to federal prosecutors cited by Courthouse News Service, recovered an illegally modified AR-platform rifle, additional firearms, body armor, high-capacity magazines, an earpiece, two radio signal devices, and multiple notebooks.

What Was in the Notebooks

Prosecutors told the court Taele had seven notebooks totaling 208 pages. Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge John Lonergan Jr. described the contents during Wednesday's hearing: drawings and sketches of the Rancho Palos Verdes golf course, lists of Secret Service schedules, details on individual security personnel, and copies of Melania Trump's schedule, according to the New York Post as cited by Fox News.

The notebooks also contained a "to-do list" for surviving "off the grid," including a list of weapons, according to Courthouse News Service. The judge did not say whether the writings reflected any specific political motive or ideology, and Taele's public defender, AJ Bayne, cautioned against assuming intent. "He's a veteran. He served our country. He has a family who loves him. I've had no problems with him. He's a good guy," Bayne told reporters, according to Courthouse News Service.

Taele served in Iraq and Afghanistan in the late 2000s and earned multiple medals, according to Courthouse News Service. Until recently he worked as a licensed armed security guard. During his pretrial evaluation, he falsely claimed to have worked for the State Department for 14 years, a claim both The Independent and the AP reported he repeated to arresting agents.

Courthouse News Service also noted a prior incident. Taele was arrested in November 2025 after accusing an AT&T store employee of spying on him with Meta Glasses, stealing the glasses, and being found muttering to himself in a parking lot. That resulted in a second-degree robbery charge.

Case Suspended, Sent to Mental Health Court

Judge Lonergan suspended criminal proceedings Wednesday after a pretrial evaluation found Taele not mentally competent to stand trial, according to the AP. The case was referred to Hollywood Mental Health Court, with Taele ordered to remain in custody until a Sept. 9 hearing.

Lonergan raised Taele's bail status from $250,000 to no bail, citing the "alarming" contents of the notebooks, according to Courthouse News Service. "This case itself is alarming in this day and age with the violence that is creeping into our everyday lives, especially with our partisanship in the political environment" ahead of the midterms, Lonergan said.

Taele appeared in the Torrance courtroom wearing a suicide-prevention vest, with nearly a dozen family members and friends watching, according to The Independent. Bayne told the court Taele "wasn't able to understand the nature" of the charges against him.

Taele faces several felony charges, including possession of a short-barreled rifle or shotgun and receiving a large-capacity magazine, plus a misdemeanor count of carrying a concealed firearm in a vehicle, according to The Independent. It remains unclear when he will next appear in federal court, though Bayne said criminal proceedings will likely continue once he is evaluated.

A Separate Threat, Same Week

The golf course arrest surfaced in court the same week Iranian state media aired a video naming and appearing to threaten Barron Trump, according to reporting from The Epoch Times carried by ZeroHedge. The Secret Service confirmed Aug. 25 it is aware of the video, which aired Aug. 24 on Iranian state television's Channel 3 and was produced by entities affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

"The U.S. Secret Service is aware of the video and investigates anything that can be perceived as a threat toward our protectees," spokesman Nate Herring said. "Out of concern for operational security, we do not discuss matters of protective intelligence." The video reportedly shows the location of the university Barron Trump attends and claims his movements and gaming accounts have been monitored. It follows a similar July broadcast that named Melania Trump. Neither claim in the Iranian video has been independently verified.

Whether the two incidents are connected has not been established by any source. The Taele case and the Iranian video threat are being treated as separate matters by the agencies involved.

Taele's next hearing is scheduled for Sept. 9 in Hollywood Mental Health Court, where doctors will assess whether he can be restored to competency to face the pending felony charges.
