Commonwealth Fusion Systems Orders 10,000+ Km of Superconducting Tape From Japan's Fujikura for Virginia Fusion Plant

Commonwealth Fusion Systems Orders 10,000+ Km of Superconducting Tape From Japan's Fujikura for Virginia Fusion Plant
MIT spinout Commonwealth Fusion Systems signed what it calls the largest single order of high-temperature superconducting tape in the industry's history, buying more than 10,000 kilometers from Tokyo's Fujikura Ltd. The tape is destined for CFS's planned ARC power plant in Chesterfield County, Virginia, but financial terms are secret and the company's experimental SPARC machine still hasn't hit the energy-breakeven milestone the whole project depends on.

Commonwealth Fusion Systems announced on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2026, that it has agreed to buy more than 10,000 kilometers of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) tape from Fujikura Ltd., a Tokyo-based electrical equipment manufacturer. CFS, headquartered in Devens, Massachusetts, called it the largest single purchase order of HTS tape in the fusion industry's history, according to a company announcement carried by PR Newswire.

The quantity is substantial. 10,000 kilometers, or about 6,214 miles, is roughly a quarter of the Earth's circumference, as the Worcester Business Journal pointed out. CFS also measured the order as three gigaampere-meters, a unit reflecting both length and current-carrying capacity.

Neither CFS nor Fujikura disclosed the price. Mugglehead noted that the Sept. 30 release gave no purchase price, no first-delivery date, and no stated contract duration, leaving outside observers unable to judge the deal's actual cost or pace.

What the Tape Is For

HTS tape is a thin superconducting material, roughly the thickness of a fingernail, used to build the high-current cables that power the magnets confining plasma inside a tokamak. Chief Science Officer Brandon Sorbom told Dow Jones Newswires, in reporting carried by Morningstar, that the tape can carry more than 200 amps and lets CFS build magnets generating roughly 20 tesla, about 13 times the strength of a typical medical MRI machine.

The tape will go toward CFS's ARC power plants, starting with the Fall Line Fusion Power Station, the company's planned first grid-scale plant in Chesterfield County, Virginia. A December 2024 CFS plan described that plant as producing about 400 megawatts, with grid power targeted for the early 2030s, according to Mugglehead.

CFS CEO and co-founder Bob Mumgaard said in the announcement: "This partnership with Fujikura demonstrates how we're actively placing orders and getting ready to execute our ARC power plant once our SPARC fusion machine achieves Q>1." Q>1 refers to the reaction producing more energy than is used to heat the plasma, the scientific milestone known as breakeven. CFS has not yet reached it. Sorbom told Dow Jones the company expects to begin commissioning SPARC, its experimental machine, next year, then push toward that breakeven target as quickly as possible.

Fujikura's Side

Fujikura, a publicly traded company (TYO: 5803), is expanding its own manufacturing to meet the order. The company had already announced a ¥5.6 billion production-expansion investment in February 2026, on top of about ¥6 billion invested in fiscal 2024, targeting three to four times its prior production capacity by fiscal 2027, according to Mugglehead. Fujikura shares traded at ¥5,239 in Tokyo on Wednesday, Sept. 30, the day the deal was announced, per Mugglehead's reporting; no comparison to the prior day's close was available in that reporting.

Fujikura CEO Naoki Okada said the agreement helps the company build "a long-term business platform for the 2030s and beyond, when commercial fusion power plants are expected to begin operation." PR Newswire's release also framed the deal as "an important step in U.S.-Japan collaboration" on fusion's industrial supply chain.

The Skeptic's Case

Fusion has promised commercial power "just around the corner" for decades, and this deal doesn't change that SPARC still hasn't hit Q>1. CFS has raised more than $4 billion since its 2018 founding as an MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center spinout, according to its own company materials, and is backed by Bill Gates, OilPrice.com reported. That's a lot of capital chasing a milestone that remains unmet. The lack of disclosed pricing on a deal this size also makes it hard for outsiders to judge whether the economics actually pencil out for a commercial plant, a point Mugglehead's reporting specifically raised.

The Global Race

CFS isn't the only player claiming progress. Good News Network reported that ENN Group, a Chinese state-backed clean energy company, achieved brief plasma fusion using hydrogen-boron fuel in a tokamak, a different approach than the deuterium-tritium fuel CFS's SPARC uses. ENN's chief engineer, Yang Yuanming, told the South China Morning Post the reactor used neutral beam injection and radio-frequency waves rather than relying solely on magnetic confinement. An unnamed international review team called the result "significant and valuable," per Good News Network. That achievement was brief plasma generation, not net energy production or a commercial demonstration, and it used a fundamentally different fuel and heating method than CFS's magnet-based tokamak.

CFS says SPARC commissioning is set to begin in 2027, and Q>1 is the milestone the entire ARC timeline, and this Fujikura tape order, is now staked on.
