Centrus Energy Signs Multi-Year HALEU Deal With Antares Nuclear, No Dollar Figure Disclosed

Centrus Energy Signs Multi-Year HALEU Deal With Antares Nuclear, No Dollar Figure Disclosed
Centrus Energy and Antares Nuclear signed a definitive multi-year contract on September 17 for uranium fuel deliveries starting before 2030, with Antares prepaying to help fund Centrus' Ohio enrichment expansion. Neither company disclosed the contract's value, and deliveries are years away, so don't expect this to move Centrus' revenue anytime soon.

Centrus Energy Corp. (NYSE: LEU) announced on September 17 that it signed a definitive multi-year contract to supply high-assay low-enriched uranium, known as HALEU, to Antares Nuclear. Deliveries are scheduled to begin before the end of the decade, according to a joint release from both companies.

Neither side disclosed the dollar value of the contract, the pricing, or delivery volumes. What they did disclose: Antares is prepaying Centrus to help fund the expansion of HALEU production capacity at Centrus' American Centrifuge Plant in Piketon, Ohio, the only licensed HALEU production facility in the western world.

"This contract is another sign that demand for HALEU is real and it is accelerating, and Centrus is in prime position to meet this need," said Amir Vexler, President and CEO of Centrus Energy. "Binding orders from Antares and others are supporting our expansion to commercial-scale production."

Antares CEO and co-founder Jordan Bramble was blunter about why this matters to his company. "Fuel supply is one of the practical questions every advanced reactor developer has to answer," Bramble said. "This contract gives Antares a reliable, U.S.-origin source of HALEU for the reactors we're deploying for a wide variety of defense and space customers."

Why Antares Needs This

Antares builds compact microreactors for what both companies describe as "critical missions" on Earth and in space. The company has landed three federal awards this year: the U.S. Army's Janus Program at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, a $2.2 billion initiative to power military bases with small reactors; the Air Force's Advanced Nuclear Power for Installations program at Joint Base San Antonio, Texas; and a Space Force Strategic Breakthrough award, worth $161 million according to NucNet, to demonstrate a space reactor.

Because Centrus' AC100 centrifuge technology is U.S.-origin and produces what the companies call "unobligated" enrichment, the fuel can be used for national security missions that foreign-sourced uranium can't touch. That's the strategic hook. China and Russia dominate global enrichment capacity, and Centrus is currently the only domestic HALEU producer with a license to operate at scale.

The Backlog Keeps Growing, But So Does the Uncertainty

The Antares deal adds to a Centrus backlog that stood at $4.5 billion at the end of the second quarter, according to Yahoo Finance, including roughly $3 billion in contingent LEU and HALEU sales commitments. About $2.4 billion of that backlog sits under definitive agreements, which is a meaningful distinction: contingent commitments can fall through, definitive agreements are contracted.

That backlog has been building fast. NucNet's own reporting shows Centrus signing a $900 million HALEU enrichment contract with the Department of Energy on July 3, an agreement with X-energy for LEU and HALEU fuel services on August 6, and now Antares on September 17. A separate deal with Radiant, according to nuclearnewsnetwork, closed roughly a week before the Antares contract using a similar prepayment structure.

The prepayment pattern deserves attention. nuclearnewsnetwork's reporting calls the Antares prepayment arrangement "the first time customer money, not just government contracts, is backing new western HALEU capacity," but the same report also describes it as "the second such deal in a week after Radiant." Those two claims don't square. Radiant's prepayment-funded deal came first. Antares is at minimum the second private capital contract layered on top of the roughly $900 million DOE task order Centrus signed in July.

The distinction matters for anyone tracking whether taxpayers or private industry are footing the bill for restoring domestic enrichment capacity. If reactor developers are now prepaying for their own fuel supply, that's private capital supporting work government contracts used to carry alone. For taxpayers, this could ease the burden if the pattern holds across more contracts.

What's Still Unknown

The financial terms of the Antares contract remain undisclosed. No specific delivery volumes or pricing have been released. "Before the end of the decade" is the only timeline given, which could mean 2027 or 2029.

TipRanks noted the most recent analyst rating on Centrus stock is a Buy with a $270 price target, while the company's technical sentiment signal is a Sell and its market cap sits at $2.91 billion. Yahoo Finance reported LEU shares fell 3.08% on the day the deal was reported. Simply Wall St's own analysis flagged that execution, funding and regulatory hurdles could still slow how quickly contracted demand becomes actual enrichment volume and revenue.

The next marker to watch is Centrus' third-quarter earnings report, where investors will look for whether the company discloses specific capacity or utilization numbers tied to the Antares, Radiant, X-energy and DOE contracts now stacked in its backlog.
