British Teen Henry Nowak Died in Handcuffs After Police Restrained Him — Not the Stabbing Suspect — Based on a Racism Allegation
Henry Nowak, 18, was stabbed five times in Southampton on December 3, 2025, and died at the scene — handcuffed by police who believed a racial abuse complaint from his alleged attacker before treating Nowak as a victim. The accused killer has since claimed self-defense at trial. Elon Musk has offered to fund a wrongful death lawsuit against the officers involved.

A Teenager Bled Out. Police Cuffed Him First.

Henry Nowak was 18 years old. A first-year accountancy and finance student at Southampton University. Out with friends on the night of December 3, 2025.

He was stabbed five times — including a three-inch wound to the chest that severed his subclavian vein and filled his chest cavity with blood. That wound killed him.

But what happened after the stabbing is what has the UK — and much of the world — furious.

What the Body Camera Footage Shows

According to testimony at Southampton Crown Court, reported by the Daily Echo, police arrived at the scene and found Nowak on the ground. He told officers he had been stabbed and that he could not breathe.

They handcuffed him. Then arrested him on suspicion of assault.

Body camera audio, played for jurors, captured an officer responding to Nowak's statement that he'd been stabbed by saying, "I don't think you have, mate."

Another officer on the transcript, quoted by prosecutor Neil King in open court, said, "He is not unconscious, mate, he isn't breathing."

The video cuts out. CPR begins.

Nowak died at the scene.

Why Police Restrained the Victim

The accused killer is 23-year-old Vickrum Digwa. He told officers at the scene that Nowak had racially abused him and knocked his turban off his head. According to testimony reported by ITV and the BBC, police appear to have acted on that claim first — handcuffing the bleeding, gasping teenager on the ground.

Digwa is now on trial at Southampton Crown Court for one count of murder and one count of carrying a knife in a public place. His mother, 53-year-old Kiran Kaur, faces a separate charge of assisting an offender — specifically, prosecutors allege she removed the knife from the scene and hid it at the family home. Both deny the charges.

Digwa's Defense: Self-Defense and Racial Provocation

On the stand, Digwa told the jury Nowak was drunk and barged into him deliberately. He claimed Nowak filmed him on his phone — a device later found in Digwa's own pocket. He said he tried to de-escalate.

Then, he claimed, Nowak punched him and pulled his turban off his head.

"I thought I had to do something because I was afraid that he was going to stab me with my own knife," Digwa testified, according to the BBC.

He admits stabbing Nowak in the back of the legs. He denies the chest wound, claiming he only learned of it during a police interview.

Prosecutors say Digwa used an eight-inch Sikh ceremonial blade — described in court as a kirpan or shastar — and after stabbing Nowak, aggressively pursued him through the street until police arrived. Nowak's blood alcohol at time of death was low enough that he could have legally driven a car, according to testimony reported by Breitbart News.

Two-Tier Policing: The Charge That Won't Go Away

British critics — and a growing number of international observers — are calling this a textbook case of "two-tier policing." The allegation: UK officers treat claims of racism or hate crime as an automatic override that supersedes basic triage of who is bleeding on the ground.

A visibly wounded teenager told police he had been stabbed. They cuffed him based on the word of the man prosecutors say put those wounds there.

Barrister Kareesha Turner of Imperium Chambers, advising alongside the Great British PAC, stated publicly that "there should be an independent investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct into whether police negligence, misconduct, or discriminatory policing contributed to the victim being left in danger."

Musk Steps In

On May 20, 2026, Elon Musk posted on X: "Unconscionable. I am happy to fund a wrongful death lawsuit against these disgusting excuses for law enforcement. They damn well better have been fired."

In a separate post, Musk asked whether any of the officers had faced disciplinary action.

No formal legal filing has been announced. According to the Conservative Post, a spokesperson for the Great British PAC confirmed they are in discussions with legal representatives and expected to raise the matter directly with Musk in coming days.

What Mainstream Coverage Is Getting Wrong

Most mainstream UK outlets are burying the police conduct story under the murder trial narrative. Whether the racial abuse claim is true or not, it has no bearing on the basic police obligation to treat an actively dying person as a medical emergency.

The handcuffing of a bleeding teenager who said he couldn't breathe — while an officer told him "I don't think you have" been stabbed — is a separate and urgent accountability question that deserves its own investigation now, not after a verdict.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct has not confirmed any live investigation as of the time of this writing.

What This Means

Henry Nowak was 18. He is dead. The trial will determine whether Vickrum Digwa is a murderer. That process must run its course.

But the officers who looked at a bleeding teenager, heard him say he'd been stabbed, and put him in handcuffs based on his alleged attacker's word — those officers also have a reckoning coming. Regardless of the verdict, regardless of the racial dynamics, regardless of what Digwa said or did.

You don't handcuff the guy bleeding on the ground.

If British law enforcement cannot figure that out, Elon Musk funding a lawsuit is the least of their problems.
