Nuclear power is suddenly the hottest thing in Silicon Valley, and it's not because anyone had a change of heart about climate policy. It's because AI data centers eat electricity like nothing this country has built before, and the grid can't keep up.

The latest example: NANO Nuclear Energy Inc. (NASDAQ: NNE) announced on August 24, 2026, a non-binding strategic commercial framework with Tillman Global Holdings and its data-center platform, Tillman Digital Gateway, according to a company release distributed by GlobeNewswire. The deal names NANO Nuclear as Tillman's anticipated preferred nuclear technology provider for a multi-state pipeline of planned AI industrial zones.

The numbers sound big. The parties are targeting 2 gigawatts or more of advanced nuclear capacity by the mid-2030s, and 6 gigawatts or more by 2040, according to both GlobeNewswire and Power Engineering. NANO Nuclear's KRONOS MMR is a 15-megawatt high-temperature gas-cooled reactor built for modular, phased deployment.

The catch is baked right into the announcement: this is non-binding. Interesting Engineering reported that the companies "now need to move from the commercial framework to site-specific development, licensing and financing agreements before any reactors can be deployed." Nothing has been built. No site has been licensed. No binding purchase commitment exists.

There's also an equity sweetener. GlobeNewswire reported the framework includes fully milestone-vesting warrants letting Tillman buy up to $100 million of NANO Nuclear common stock, with most of those warrants tied to future binding reactor purchase commitments. Interesting Engineering added a separate detail: a proposed $5 million initial restricted stock grant to Tillman, mostly contingent on hitting milestones. In corporate-speak terms, Tillman gets paid in NANO Nuclear stock for helping make this deal look real, whether or not a single reactor ever gets built.

James Walker, CEO of NANO Nuclear, called the framework "a milestone in our future customer acquisition strategy," per Interesting Engineering. Tillman Co-President Sachit Ahuja said the company is "planning for the long-term electricity requirements of its AI campuses" that will need power "for decades to come."

But "planning" and "acquiring customers" is not the same as delivering power.

Meta's Deals Are Further Along, But Still Years Out

Compare that to what Meta announced days earlier. Breitbart, citing the Wall Street Journal, reported that Meta signed multiple nuclear arrangements involving reactor developers TerraPower and Oklo, plus a power-purchase deal with Vistra covering three existing operational nuclear plants.

The Vistra piece is real and near-term: that electricity purchase is scheduled to begin later this year, running on existing grid infrastructure, according to Breitbart. That's actual power from actual plants already running.

The new-build reactors are a different story. Meta is funding TerraPower to accelerate two reactors targeting up to 690 megawatts of capacity by 2032, with an option to expand to six more units by 2035, Breitbart reported. The Oklo partnership funds a nuclear campus on a 206-acre site in Pike County, Ohio, that could eventually reach roughly 1,200 megawatts. Oklo CEO Jacob DeWitte called it "a significant milestone."

Urvi Parekh, Meta's director of global energy, told the Wall Street Journal the 2030 and 2032 targets are aggressive even by normal power-project standards, and would require rapidly securing regulator-acceptable sites, coordinating grid connections with utilities, and standing up manufacturing capacity most of these reactor designs don't yet have at scale. That's Meta's own energy chief admitting the timeline is a stretch.

A separate industry analysis from Enkiai put Meta's January 2026 nuclear commitments at up to 6.6 gigawatts total, which it described as the largest corporate nuclear commitment to date, with most of that capacity slated for commercial operation between 2030 and 2035. The same analysis noted only one pre-2030 asset among all 13 hyperscalers tracked: Microsoft's restart of Three Mile Island Unit 1. Everything else, across the entire industry, is years away.

What's Actually Proven vs. What's a Bet

None of this is a scam. TerraPower, Oklo, and NANO Nuclear are real companies with real regulatory filings pending. Vistra's existing plants are real and already producing power. Tillman is a real infrastructure developer.

What's not proven yet: that any of these next-generation reactors will get built on time, get licensed on time, or come in anywhere near the cost projections companies are floating. Advanced reactor construction in the U.S. has a long history of missed deadlines and blown budgets, going back decades before "AI" was even a buzzword.

The honest read is that Big Tech has decided nuclear is the only realistic path to firm, 24/7, carbon-free power at the scale AI needs, and they're willing to put their balance sheets behind it as anchor customers to de-risk projects for developers. That's a legitimate strategic bet on American energy infrastructure, and it beats waiting around for slow-moving utility interconnection queues.

But readers should treat every gigawatt figure in these announcements as a target, not a delivery date. NANO Nuclear's own materials call the Tillman framework "non-binding." Watch for whether that framework converts into an actual binding reactor purchase agreement, which is the trigger for most of Tillman's stock warrants to vest, and whether Meta's TerraPower and Oklo reactors clear Nuclear Regulatory Commission licensing on anything close to the 2030-2032 schedule Meta's own energy director admits is a stretch.
