What it actually does

Thunder is classified as a Group 5 unmanned aircraft system, the U.S. government's top tier for drones, meaning it weighs over 1,320 pounds and can fly above 18,000 feet, according to TWZ. But altitude isn't the point. Shane Arnott, Anduril's senior vice president overseeing the program, told reporters the aircraft is designed to spend most of its life flying low, nap-of-the-earth, the same way an Apache does.

Arnott said Thunder will match the range and speed of the Army's future MV-75 Cheyenne II tiltrotor while carrying an Apache-equivalent payload, according to Breaking Defense. The weapons bays are modular. That war has turned cheap loitering munitions and disposable first-person-view drones into some of the deadliest threats facing helicopter crews. Anduril's own release, cited by Defense News, put it bluntly: "Attack helicopters and their crews, long the lifeblood of maneuver warfare, are increasingly held at risk by a combination of loitering munitions, cheap air defenses, and ubiquitous persistent ISR platforms that have rendered the near-surface domain one of the most lethal places on the battlefield."

The idea is to put an expendable, pilotless aircraft in front of the threat instead of risking a crewed helicopter and the pilots inside it.

The engineering, and the honest caveats

Thunder runs on a series hybrid-electric powertrain and uses tilt rotors, letting it take off and land vertically while cruising like a fixed-wing aircraft, according to Defense News. It's flown and coordinated using Anduril's Lattice autonomy software, which the company says handles formation flying and separation from crewed aircraft so pilots can focus on the mission instead of babysitting the drone.

It's also built to be shipped. The whole aircraft breaks down to fit inside a standard 40-foot ISO shipping container, meaning it can move by truck, rail, ship or cargo plane, according to Breaking Defense and TWZ.

None of this is flying yet. Arnott told TWZ that first flight is targeted for sometime next year, with full-scale production possibly not underway until the end of the decade, and only if demand justifies it. Anduril has said it's already working with government customers on the program but declined to name them, TWZ reported. No confirmed U.S. military contract exists, no named foreign buyer has signed on, and no flying prototype exists yet. Only a mockup is on display at Farnborough that Anduril says reflects a mature outer mold-line design.
