Trump Says He Will Add Wildfire Smoke Costs to Canada Tariffs, Doesn't Say How

Since air quality alerts blanketed more than 100 million Americans across 18 states earlier this week, President Trump has escalated his response from complaint to threat: he now says he will add the cost of Canadian wildfire smoke to existing tariffs on Canadian goods.

Trump made the announcement Friday in a Truth Social post, writing that the United States is being "unnecessarily invaded by filthy, polluted, and unhealthy air" and calling Canada's handling of its forests "Willful Negligence." He said the smoke has become "a yearly occurrence, costing the United States Billions of Dollars, which cost of this pollution must of necessity be added to the TARIFFS Canada is currently paying."

The president said he planned to call Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Friday to press for action. As of Friday evening, Carney had not publicly responded to the tariff threat, according to the Daily Wire.

Sen. Moreno also took a swipe at Canadian leadership, saying "you don't have to be very smart to get elected as a liberal, you just have to be woke."

On the Canadian side, Ontario Premier Doug Ford pushed back directly on Trump's complaint, telling reporters that critics should offer help instead of grievances: "If there's some politicians out there chirping away, well maybe what you should do rather than complain, is send support, send help, because we have done the exact same thing for our American friends," according to the Daily Wire.
