The symptoms they trigger — stiff joints, lethargy, reduced appetite, fever — overlap with dozens of other conditions, which makes prompt diagnosis critical.

William Miller Jr., VMD, a professor of dermatology at Cornell's College of Veterinary Medicine, explains that ticks attach and feed during their nymph and adult stages. How Ticks Actually Work

Understanding the biology helps explain why prevention matters more than reaction.

Tick larvae require a blood meal to develop into nymphs. Nymphs require blood to mature into adults. Adult females require blood to mate and lay eggs — thousands of them. Every stage of the tick's life cycle runs on animal blood, according to Cornell. That biological dependency is what drives the behavior that puts cats at risk.

Ticks do not jump or fly. They position themselves on vegetation and wait for a warm-bodied host to pass close enough to grab onto. Outdoor cats, and indoor-outdoor cats with any yard access, are exposed every time they move through grass, brush, or leaf litter during warmer months.

Some cat owners push back on tick-focused advisories with a fair point: indoor cats face essentially zero tick exposure, and even outdoor cats in certain geographic regions face lower risk than others. Tick species are not uniformly distributed across the United States, and cytauxzoonosis, for example, is concentrated in south-central and southeastern states. A cat that never leaves a fifth-floor apartment is not meaningfully at risk.

That objection is valid for fully indoor cats. For any cat with outdoor access, even limited access, the risk increases. Ticks can also enter homes on dogs, on clothing, or on other animals. The Cornell advisory does not overstate risk. It targets the real exposure population: cats that go outside during tick season.

What to Do

Cornell's College of Veterinary Medicine is actively conducting a feline tick study and is asking owners who find ticks on their cats to participate. That kind of real-world data collection matters because feline tick research has historically lagged behind canine tick research, and the geographic spread of tick species is changing.

For owners, the immediate action list is short: check cats for ticks after any outdoor time, know the symptoms (fever, lethargy, pale gums, appetite loss, swollen joints, labored breathing), and do NOT wait to see if symptoms resolve on their own.
