500 Million Monthly Users, Three Years In

Threads crossed 500 million monthly active users this month, Meta announced Tuesday, June 16. The milestone arrives just ahead of the platform's third anniversary in July 2026.

For context: Threads added roughly 100 million new users since last August, according to Engadget. That's solid but not explosive growth. The platform went from zero to 100 million users in its first five days back in 2023, a pace that made headlines at the time.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said publicly that he believes Threads could eventually reach 1 billion users. Whether the current growth rate gets it there is an open question.

What's Driving Growth

Meta says the growth is being powered by its Communities feature, dedicated in-app spaces organized around topics like basketball, K-pop, books, and television. The company is now moving Communities out of beta and launching a "Communities Hub" to make them easier to find, plus distinct icons for each group.

Engadget reported that Meta also noted increasing traction in Asia, specifically South Korea (time spent up 80 percent year-over-year) and Japan (up 130 percent). Those are notable numbers for a platform that was initially seen as primarily Western.

Meta also claims that more users are opening Threads directly rather than clicking through from Instagram or Facebook, a sign the platform is developing its own gravity rather than just coasting on Meta's existing network.

The DAU Problem

Monthly active users always look more favorable than daily active users. Meta stopped disclosing Threads' daily active user count after October 2025, when it reported 150 million DAUs, according to Engadget.

Asked about current daily users, the company told reporters the metric is "growing strongly year-over-year globally" and then declined to share the actual number.

That is a meaningful omission. A platform with 500 million monthly users but a relatively small daily active base would tell a very different story about genuine engagement. Meta has every incentive to share the number if it's impressive. The fact that they haven't since October raises questions about engagement depth.

New Features: Your Algo and Live Chats

Beyond the user count, Threads announced two feature expansions Tuesday.

The first is "Your Algo," a private feed-control tool. Earlier this year, Threads launched "Dear Algo," which let users influence their feed by writing a public post, a clunky process that required sharing your preferences with the world. The new tool handles it privately. Users can tell Threads to show more or less of specific topics, set a duration of one, three, or seven days, and keep it entirely to themselves.

Your Algo is rolling out now in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia, and New Zealand, according to TechCrunch. Meta hasn't said when other markets get access.

One honest critique of the feature: the requests are still temporary. As Engadget pointed out, Meta doesn't want to fully relinquish its grip on feed recommendations. Users who want a permanently customized feed will need to keep updating their preferences manually.

The second feature is Live Chats, real-time conversations within Communities during events like the FIFA World Cup. Launched in April, Live Chats are set to expand to all communities by July, according to TechCrunch.

The Revenue Question

The strongest counterargument to treating this milestone as a clear win is simple: Threads isn't making meaningful money.

Meta rolled out Threads ads in 200 countries earlier this year. Despite that, CFO Susan Li said in April that the company does not expect Threads to be a "meaningful driver" of revenue growth in 2026, according to Engadget. A platform with 500 million monthly users that isn't moving the needle financially is either still in investment mode or struggling to monetize its audience, and Meta hasn't been transparent about which.

Skeptics have a fair point here. Half a billion monthly users is a big number, but monthly active user counts can include people who opened the app once. Without daily active user data, and without a revenue contribution, the milestone is harder to evaluate on its own terms.

What Meta Actually Controls

Meta still decides which topics get a dedicated Community. As of December 2025, the platform had more than 200 approved communities. Threads boss Connor Hayes told The Verge that letting users create their own communities rather than waiting for Meta approval could arrive "maybe in the next year."

Currently, the Communities feature that Meta is crediting for growth is entirely curated by Meta. Users can join communities; they can't build them without Meta's sign-off. Whether that becomes a ceiling on growth is an unresolved question.

For Threads to reach Zuckerberg's 1 billion target, it will likely need either user-generated communities at scale or a sustained breakout in markets like Southeast Asia and Latin America where the platform hasn't yet reported specific traction numbers.
