Tent Collapse Kills 1 and Injures 22 at Virginia Church's 20th Anniversary Service

One person is dead and 22 more were injured after a severe storm brought down an outdoor tent during a 20th anniversary celebration service at EastLake Community Church in Moneta, Virginia, on Friday evening, June 12.

The collapse happened around 6:45 p.m. at the church in Bedford County, according to FOX 5 DC. Moneta sits roughly 25 miles southeast of Roanoke and about 40 miles southwest of Lynchburg.

Pastor Troy Keaton described the moment in a Facebook post reported by both CBS News and AP News: "Just as I had walked to the stage to release people to their cars, a burst of wind picked up the tent."

Keaton said "one of our dear brothers suffered a fatal injury" and that the church "suffered a great tragedy tonight after an outdoor tent collapsed during a celebration service for our 20th anniversary."

Bedford County officials reported that one person was killed at the scene, 11 were transported to local hospitals, and another 11 were treated on site for minor injuries. Bedford County classified the incident as a mass casualty event, according to CBS News.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, as reported by the NY Post, outflow from a nearby thunderstorm blew down two tents. FOX 5 DC noted that a Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued for the area shortly before the church reported the incident. A Flash Flood Warning was also in effect for the Lynchburg area Friday night.

CBS News reported a detail the other outlets did not prominently feature: the tent had passed a formal inspection conducted by the Bedford County Division of Building Inspections on Tuesday, June 10, just two days before the collapse. The NY Post cited the FOX Forecast Center noting the area was NOT under any severe weather warnings at the time of the collapse. Virginia Senator Mark Peake posted on X: "Our thoughts are with the entire Bedford community during this difficult time."

Rocky Mount Mayor C. Holland Perdue released a statement saying, "Our thoughts and prayers are with the members of Eastlake Community Church and everyone affected by today's tent collapse."
