Renaissance Capital: 2026 US IPO Proceeds Hit $146 Billion as Anthropic Weighs a Possible $86 Billion Listing

Renaissance Capital: 2026 US IPO Proceeds Hit $146 Billion as Anthropic Weighs a Possible $86 Billion Listing
Renaissance Capital's Fall 2026 IPO Preview, published September 8, says US listings have already raised $146 billion this year, with Anthropic and possibly OpenAI headlining a packed autumn pipeline. Nearly half that total came from one deal, SpaceX's June offering, which is why calling 2026 a record year is more complicated than the headline number suggests.

A record year built on one deal

Renaissance Capital, the IPO research firm that has tracked new listings for more than 35 years, published its Fall 2026 US IPO Preview on September 8. The report says US IPO proceeds have hit $146 billion year-to-date, a record pace. Strip out SpaceX's June offering and the number drops to $71 billion, according to the report.

SpaceX's IPO raised roughly $75 billion in its base offering in June, a figure that grew to around $86 billion once the overallotment option was included, according to data cited by Value Add VC. That single deal accounts for roughly half of the year's entire IPO proceeds total. Value Add VC notes this concentration matters because it makes the "record pace" look more fragile than the headline number implies. A market that hits $160 billion mostly because of one company's mega-listing is structurally different from one that gets there through broad demand across dozens of mid-sized deals.

Value Add VC also separately reported that total 2026 proceeds stood at roughly $160.6 billion as of August 19, citing Renaissance Capital data, a figure higher than the $146 billion Renaissance itself published on September 8. The two numbers don't reconcile cleanly, and neither source explains the gap. Readers should treat the $146 billion figure as Renaissance's own current official tally, since it comes directly from the firm's newest report.

Deal count tells a steadier story. Renaissance says 232 companies have completed US IPOs so far in 2026, about 4% more than the same point in 2025, which Value Add VC calls a real increase in volume rather than a statistical trick from a handful of giant listings.

Anthropic and OpenAI lead the fall pipeline

The name drawing the most attention is Anthropic, the AI developer behind the Claude model family. Bloomberg reported on September 9, per Bloomingbit, that Anthropic is pursuing an IPO that could match or exceed SpaceX's roughly $86 billion offering size, at a valuation being discussed around $2 trillion. Value Add VC reported Anthropic was preparing to file as soon as the end of August, though no filing has been publicly confirmed as of this writing. Bloomberg's September 9 reporting still describes the company as "pursuing" and "preparing" a debut rather than having filed.

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is also described as a possible fall or 2026-into-2027 listing candidate. Value Add VC reported OpenAI has confidentially filed for an IPO, but with no set timeline. Nicholas Einhorn, a senior analyst at Renaissance Capital, said the firm expects a busy fall driven by healthy investor demand and a deep bench of high-profile companies ready to go public.

Matt Kennedy, chief strategist at Renaissance Capital, told Bloomberg that lofty valuations for large IPOs don't automatically signal a bubble. Investors accepted SpaceX's high valuation, he said, because it reflected the company's long-term earnings potential, and Anthropic could use the same logic to justify a roughly $2 trillion price tag. Kennedy works for the firm whose business is tracking and promoting IPO activity.

Beyond AI, and the headwinds nobody's pricing in yet

The fall pipeline isn't just AI. Renaissance flagged fintech, defense, and consumer names rounding out the calendar, and Value Add VC noted a run of defense and space listings plus a wave of biotech IPOs earlier in August that priced above range and popped on debut, evidence demand extends beyond a handful of trillion-dollar AI names. Other AI-adjacent candidates named by Bloomberg include cloud computing firm Nscale, power supplier Aggreko, and consumer health tech company Oura Health. Ajay Shah, chairman of Deutsche Bank's technology investment banking division, said data centers, power and cooling infrastructure, and consumer healthcare could draw investor interest this fall.

Bloomberg also flagged real headwinds: rising oil prices, the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, and the possibility of additional interest-rate increases. Some companies are reportedly delaying listing plans until conditions improve, while others are moving ahead anyway, according to Bloomberg's September 9 reporting.

The Renaissance IPO Index, which tracks recently listed companies, is up 15.0% year-to-date, per Renaissance's own report, though the firm notes that's well off its summer highs. It's still beating the S&P 500, which Renaissance takes as a sign investor demand for new stocks remains solid.

Value Add VC cautions that 2021's IPO record was inflated by a SPAC boom that later produced a wave of overpriced, low-quality deals. Whether 2026's AI-driven surge holds up better depends on what happens after Anthropic and OpenAI actually price. Neither company has filed a public S-1 or set a listing date as of September 9, and Renaissance's own analysts have not said which one, if either, will actually reach the market before year-end.
