Oracle's $300 Billion OpenAI Bet Is Turning Into a Windfall for Vertiv, Caterpillar and Corning

Oracle has committed $300 billion over multiple years to supply computing power to OpenAI, the backbone of the Stargate initiative it's building alongside SoftBank, according to Crypto Briefing. That number could climb as high as $500 billion. The buildout spans campuses in Texas, New Mexico, Wisconsin and Michigan targeting a combined 10 gigawatts of capacity.

The individual price tags are staggering on their own. The Michigan campus carries a $16.3 billion financing package anchored by PIMCO. Texas and Wisconsin infrastructure funding totals roughly $38 billion. The New Mexico site, called Project Jupiter, runs $18 billion. Oracle already has more than 300,000 GPUs operational and added 850 megawatts of capacity in a recent quarter, with cloud infrastructure revenue up 121% year over year, per Crypto Briefing.

This scale of spending is creating real, measurable demand for the companies that build data center infrastructure: power systems, cooling, generators and fiber.

Vertiv and Caterpillar Cash In

Vertiv Holdings and Caterpillar have formalized a strategic partnership aimed squarely at AI data center deployments, combining Vertiv's power and cooling expertise with Caterpillar's generators and backup power systems, according to Crypto Briefing. The goal is speed: compressing the timeline from site selection to operational deployment.

Vertiv's financial results show the effect. The company posted second-quarter net sales of about $3.27 billion, up 24% year over year, according to The Motley Fool. It announced four new or expanding factories to keep pace with demand and a $50 million investment in Ohio to expand liquid-cooling and chilled-water production. That Ironton, Ohio expansion isn't expected to be operational until the second quarter of 2027, a reminder that even strong demand takes years to translate into finished capacity. Vertiv shares closed recently at $249.39, up 3.27% on the day, with a market cap around $96 billion, according to The Motley Fool.

Caterpillar supplies the natural gas generators and turbines that let hyperscalers power data centers off-grid when utility connections take too long, per The Motley Fool. Management has said data center demand is now a key driver of its power generation business. Caterpillar shares were up 1.30% in the same reporting window.

Corning's Fiber Bet

The buildout extends to fiber and optical infrastructure. Corning, the 175-year-old New York manufacturer known to consumers for kitchenware and smartphone glass, is partnering with NVIDIA to build three optical-manufacturing facilities in North Carolina and Texas, according to Fox News. The project is expected to create more than 3,000 jobs and expand Corning's U.S. optical-fiber capacity tenfold.

Corning chairman, CEO and president Wendell Weeks told Fox News Digital the company is in its fastest growth period in nearly two centuries and expects to roughly double in size, with most new hires in advanced manufacturing based in the U.S. "AI is a huge job creator, and it's a huge manufacturing job creator," Weeks said.

Where the Power Comes From

Running 10 gigawatts of AI infrastructure requires enormous amounts of electricity, and Oracle is moving to lock some of it down. On September 18, Oracle announced investments in ten Texas wind projects totaling more than 1.7 gigawatts of generation capacity, with partners including Clearway Energy, ENGIE, RWE and Scout Clean Energy, according to ESG Today. The power will feed the ERCOT grid that supplies Oracle's Abilene, Texas facility.

Oracle says the projects will generate enough electricity annually to power the equivalent of more than 525,000 U.S. homes and avoid an estimated 1.8 million metric tons of CO2 emissions a year. Mahesh Thiagarajan, executive vice president of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, said the deals mark "measurable progress" toward the company's goal of matching 100% of AI data center electricity use with carbon-free power by 2035.

Oracle also frames the wind deals as boosting "grid resiliency and grid power affordability" for Texas homes, schools and hospitals, according to tedmag. That's Oracle's own characterization of its impact on the grid, not an independently verified outcome. ERCOT ratepayers may well have different views as data center demand continues to climb.

The broader AI power crunch is also reviving nuclear investment. Oklo, backed by OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman, is advancing advanced reactor projects, and Meta has signed a 6.6 gigawatt nuclear energy deal, according to the Epoch Times. SpaceX has even floated a concept for solar-powered AI satellites called AI1, per the same report, though that idea remains speculative and years from any deployment.

One significant consideration is that Oracle's buildout is largely debt-financed, and the entire structure depends on OpenAI's ability to pay Oracle back on a $300 billion, possibly $500 billion, contract. OpenAI does not publicly disclose profitability at that scale. Crypto Briefing notes that Vertiv and Caterpillar shares have already swung on shifting sentiment about AI infrastructure spending, climbing when the buildout looks unstoppable and pulling back whenever overinvestment worries surface. Whether Oracle's bet turns into durable industrial demand or a cautionary tale about AI-fueled excess remains uncertain, and the Ironton, Ohio factory not coming online until 2027 shows just how much of this is still on paper.
