Iran Says Attack Likely Before Israel's Oct. 27 Vote, White House Says No Strike Before Midterms

Iran Says Attack Likely Before Israel's Oct. 27 Vote, White House Says No Strike Before Midterms
Senior Iranian officials told Drop Site that Tehran's intelligence points to U.S.-Israeli strikes before Tuesday's Israeli election. A person briefed on the planning told NPR the target is early November, after the U.S. midterms, and the White House denies any pre-midterm attack. Carrier and Marine deployments are still moving toward the region while the two timelines contradict each other.

Since the U.S. and Israel launched their war on Iran on Feb. 28, the ceasefire has collapsed into a stalemate over the Strait of Hormuz. As of Saturday, Oct. 24, the open question is when, not whether, strikes resume, and the accounts of the timeline do not match.

Two timelines, one denial

A senior Iranian official told Drop Site that Tehran's internal intelligence assessment shows a high likelihood of large-scale bombing before Israel's election on Tuesday, Oct. 27. The official spoke anonymously because he was not authorized to speak publicly.

According to that official, Iran expects Israel to fire first at newly deployed air defenses to clear the way for U.S. bombers. U.S. forces would then go after southern defenses along the Strait of Hormuz and might try to seize an island near the Iranian mainland.

A different account came from a person briefed on U.S. and Israeli war planning, who spoke to NPR on condition of anonymity. That person said Israel had planned to strike in mid-October, about two weeks before its vote, but President Trump objected. U.S. forces are now being assembled to be ready by early November, after the Nov. 3 midterms.

The same person said the buildup could also be part of a pressure campaign to push Tehran toward a deal.

The White House rejects the earlier date. "The United States will not be attacking Iran at any time prior to the midterm elections," Principal Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly said.

Trump himself kept the option visible. At a Florida rally he alluded to a possible new operation, using "Epic Fury," the name of the earlier campaign against Iran.

Forces on the move

A U.S. official cited by Drop Site confirmed a rapid movement of military assets in anticipation of a possible order from Trump. The USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier and the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit, which together bring about 10,000 additional sailors and Marines, are headed to the Middle East.

The official said the Roosevelt left Japan on Monday and could arrive by the end of next week. It is expected to join the USS George H.W. Bush and USS George Washington in the Arabian Sea.

The same official said CENTCOM chief Gen. Bradley Cooper is pressing to resume combat operations. That claim rests on a single anonymous account, and the Pentagon has not commented on it in these reports.

Netanyahu's campaign and Tehran's warnings

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is seeking reelection while campaigning on a threat to topple Iran's regime. He has said Tehran is again trying to build nuclear weapons. He has also directed the military, Mossad and security agencies to prepare for preemptive action, saying the only way to end the threat is regime change.

Polls show a close race between his bloc and the opposition, and neither side has a clear path to the 61 seats needed to govern.

Iran's leaders are answering in public. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told state media Thursday, "We are just as prepared for diplomacy as we are for war," and that any scenario is conceivable, including a U.S.-Israeli attack.

Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei warned that Iran can still fire missiles and drones at U.S. assets in the region. If hostilities resume, he said, Iran's target list will widen to include data centers, cables and artificial intelligence facilities.

IRGC political deputy Yadollah Javani said Iran is prepared to destroy internet cables under the Strait of Hormuz. "The Americans must leave the region," he said. IRGC spokesman Hossein Mohebbi said late last month, "We have new targets that have not yet been attacked."

The senior Iranian official also claimed that in a new war, given how U.S. forces are deployed around the region, American casualties "will be ten times higher." That is an Iranian claim, not an established figure.

Diplomacy stalled

The same Iranian official blamed the deadlock on Trump, saying he has "sat on Iran's proposed package for ending the war" and has no clear plan. The White House has not publicly responded to that characterization.

On the ground, the damage is real on both sides. NPR reports that U.S. strikes have degraded Iran's air force, air defenses and navy, yet Iran can still threaten Gulf states, Jordan and Israel. Iran has blocked Hormuz since the war began, and the U.S. has answered with a blockade of Iranian ports and oil shipments.

In Tehran, residents told CNN they are stockpiling water and charging power banks. One said, "Every single day and every night, we're waiting for the bombing to start again."

What to watch

Tuesday's Israeli vote and the Nov. 3 U.S. midterms are now the two markers against which every claim will be tested. If strikes come before Nov. 3, the White House statement will have been wrong. If they come after, Iran's assessment will have been wrong. The Roosevelt's expected arrival late next week will show how much force is in place when that window opens.
