Iran-Backed Militia Commander Arrested for Plotting Attacks on U.S. Synagogues and Jewish Sites

Federal prosecutors charged Mohammad Baqer Saad Dawood Al-Saadi, a commander of Kataib Hezbollah, with planning terrorist attacks on Jewish targets in New York City, Los Angeles, and Scottsdale, Arizona. He allegedly tried to hire an undercover law enforcement officer to carry out the attacks. This is a direct shot from an Iranian proxy at American civilians on U.S. soil — and it deserves a lot more attention than it's getting.

An Iranian Proxy Tried to Kill Americans at Home. Here's What Happened.

On May 15, 2026, U.S. federal authorities arrested Mohammad Baqer Saad Dawood Al-Saadi, an Iraqi national and commander of Kata'ib Hizballah — one of Iran's most dangerous and hardline proxy militias in Iraq.

The charges: two counts of conspiring to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization, two counts of conspiring to provide material support for acts of terrorism, one count of conspiracy to bomb a place of public use, and one count of destruction of property by fire or explosive. According to NBC News, Al-Saadi made his initial federal court appearance in lower Manhattan the same day.

The alleged targets: a Manhattan synagogue, sites in Los Angeles, and targets in Scottsdale, Arizona.

A commander of an Iranian-backed terrorist organization was actively plotting to blow up Jewish community sites across multiple American cities.

How They Caught Him

According to the federal complaint cited by NBC News, Al-Saadi attempted to hire someone to carry out the attacks. That someone turned out to be an undercover law enforcement officer.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed the department worked with federal partners to disrupt the Manhattan synagogue plot, stating: "Working with our federal law enforcement partners, we disrupted a plan to attack a Manhattan synagogue, and in partnership with the synagogue's leadership, ensured its security when the threat was elevated."

Tisch also addressed the broader threat: "This case puts into stark relief the global threats posed by the Iranian regime and its proxies like Kata'ib Hizballah — Foreign Terrorist Organizations that have repeatedly targeted Jewish communities across Europe and the United States since the war began."

Who Is Kata'ib Hizballah?

Kata'ib Hizballah — also spelled Kataib Hezbollah — is a U.S.-designated foreign terrorist organization operating out of Iraq. It has deep operational ties to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which the U.S. has also designated a foreign terrorist group, according to NYT reporting.

Al-Saadi is no low-level operative. According to the federal complaint cited by NBC News, he and his associates planned, coordinated, and claimed responsibility for at least 18 terrorist attacks in Europe and two attacks in Canada. Since the U.S. and Israel launched military operations against Iran, Al-Saadi allegedly "directed attacks on U.S. and Israeli interests including by killing Americans and Jews."

Eighteen attacks in Europe. Two in Canada. Now three planned in the United States. This represents a sustained, organized transnational terror campaign.

What Mainstream Coverage Is Getting Wrong

Most outlets buried the geopolitical context. The arrest happened against the backdrop of an active U.S.-Israel military campaign against Iran. This is not historical — the threat remains active.

Some coverage from outlets like NBC News and the NYT covered the arrest factually. But the framing consistently used softer language around Iran. Kata'ib Hizballah did not emerge independently. It is a direct instrument of Iranian foreign policy, funded and directed by the IRGC. Calling it an "Iran-linked" group is accurate but incomplete. This is Iran using a proxy to wage war on American soil.

Also overlooked: the scale of the European and Canadian attacks Al-Saadi is accused of coordinating. Twenty attacks across allied Western nations before this U.S. plot. The story extends far beyond one arrest.

Why This Matters

Someone was attempting to blow up a synagogue in Manhattan in 2026.

The Iranian regime has made a strategic decision to export its war against Jewish people and Western interests directly into the United States. Al-Saadi's alleged operation spanned three American cities and was connected to a global network responsible for dozens of attacks.

Law enforcement succeeded here. The NYPD and federal agencies worked together, ran the sting, made the arrest.

But a critical question remains: how many more Al-Saadis are operating right now? The complaint states he directed others and attempted to coordinate. "Others" is plural. "Attempted" suggests some efforts may have advanced further.

Iran is at war with the United States and Israel. It is fighting through proxies on European soil, Canadian soil, and now attempted on American soil. Treating each arrest as an isolated news event misses the strategy. A terrorist commander just tried to bomb a synagogue in New York City.
