India's Retail Inflation Climbs to 4.82% in August as Food and Fuel Prices Squeeze Households

India's Retail Inflation Climbs to 4.82% in August as Food and Fuel Prices Squeeze Households
India's CPI inflation hit 4.82% in August, the third straight month above the RBI's 4% target, as food prices drove most of the increase and transport costs jumped amid rising oil prices. The Reserve Bank of India held its rate steady at 5.25% last month and says the outlook is hazy. Onion prices alone more than doubled year-over-year.

India's consumer price index rose 4.82% in August compared with a year earlier, up from 4.45% in July, according to data released Monday by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI). That's the third consecutive month inflation has run above the Reserve Bank of India's 4% medium-term target, according to the Free Press Journal.

The number landed close to what forecasters expected. A Bloomberg survey of economists had projected 4.86%. A Business Standard poll of 11 economists put the median estimate at 4.8%. Mint's poll of 21 economists forecast 4.9%, which would have made it a 20-month high. The actual 4.82% print came in slightly under most of those estimates, though CNBC reported it topped the 4.80% consensus in a separate Reuters poll.

One inconsistency to note: the Free Press Journal described August's reading as an 'eight-month high,' while Mint's pre-release poll had framed a similar number as a '20-month high.' The discrepancy traces to which comparison period is used. As EconoLens noted in its coverage of July's data, India's current CPI series runs on a 2024 base year, and comparisons to the older back-series aren't strictly apples-to-apples.

Food Is Doing the Heavy Lifting

Food prices drove most of the increase. The Consumer Food Price Index rose to 5.95% in August from 5.52% in July, MoSPI said. Rural food inflation hit 6.13%; urban food inflation came in at 5.64%.

Onion prices more than doubled, with inflation hitting 48.27% in August compared with 22.54% in July, according to the Free Press Journal. Garlic prices rose 43.60%. Ginger inflation stayed elevated at 73.82%, though that's down from July's 83.62%, per EconoLens's coverage of the prior month's data.

Not everything went up. Tomato prices fell 31.09% year-over-year, and potatoes dropped 13.14%, offering some relief on the vegetable side of the ledger.

Outside food, transport costs jumped. Goods transport service inflation rose over 14% in August, and personal transport inflation crossed 7%, according to CNBC.

The Iran War Connection

The transport spike isn't happening in isolation. India imports nearly 85% of its fuel needs and relies on the energy corridor through the Strait of Hormuz, CNBC reported. Brent crude has pushed past $100 a barrel amid the ongoing Iran war, and prices rose further after Saudi Arabia closed a major East-West pipeline following drone-attack damage, according to CNBC.

Goldman Sachs has warned oil could climb to $120 a barrel if shipping attacks in the region intensify, though it could fall toward $80 if Gulf exports normalize, the bank said in comments reported by the Epoch Times.

The same oil shock is visible in U.S. data. U.S. diesel prices climbed above $6 a gallon for the first time on record, the Epoch Times reported September 11, and August's U.S. CPI showed gasoline prices up 27.4% year-over-year, according to the Labor Department data cited by Breitbart. U.S. headline inflation held at 3.4% annually in August, with core inflation ticking down slightly to 2.4% from 2.5%, Breitbart reported.

RBI's Bet on Patience

The Reserve Bank of India's Monetary Policy Committee held its repo rate steady at 5.25% at its August meeting and kept a neutral policy stance, according to Mint. The RBI has called the inflation outlook 'hazy' and said it wants more clarity before acting.

The central bank projects headline inflation at 5% for the fiscal year ending March 2027, with core inflation at 4.3%, according to CNBC. It expects the July-September quarter to average 4.7%, rising to 5.9% in October-December before easing to 5.5% in January-March, per Mint's reporting.

Some economists think that timeline is too generous. Madhavankutty G, chief economist at Canara Bank, told Business Standard that if September's CPI print comes in closer to 6%, the second-quarter average could 'marginally overshoot' the RBI's 4.7% forecast, and the MPC 'would be mindful of this' at its October meeting. Gaura Sengupta of IDFC First Bank pointed to a broad-based pickup across sugar, onions and packaged goods, tying part of it to rising plastics costs from the West Asia crisis. Rajani Sinha of CareEdge Ratings flagged delayed plantings that hurt onion supply and a shift toward ethanol production that has tightened sugar availability.

Against that, the RBI's own position is that headline inflation remains within its formal 2%-6% tolerance band and that core inflation, its preferred gauge, isn't yet a major concern. The bank has explicitly said it wants to see clearer signals before tightening, a stance that puts it at odds with Asian peers who have already raised rates to counter the same energy shock, according to CNBC.

Growth data complicates the picture further. India's economy grew 7.8% in the June quarter, stronger than expected, and Morgan Stanley and Citi both raised their FY27 growth forecasts to 7.3%, CNBC reported. HSBC, meanwhile, expects growth to soften in the second half of the year because of a high statistical base, cuts to public capital spending, and weak monsoon rains hurting crop sowing.

MoSPI will not release September's inflation data until after the RBI's October Monetary Policy Committee meeting, according to the Free Press Journal. The central bank will have to make its next call on rates without the freshest read on prices, right as the Iran war's effect on oil markets remains unresolved.
