India's Metro Network Hits 1,170 km, Trails US by 216 km, Minister Says Two Years From Overtaking

India's metro rail network reached 1,170 km across 26 cities after Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar inaugurated an extended line in Indore on September 5, 2026, according to the Times of India and NDTV. Khattar told reporters the network is now just 216 km behind the United States, which he put at 1,386 km. "I think in the next two years, we will overtake the US and become the world's second-largest country in terms of metro rail network after China," he said, according to NDTV and News18.

China remains far out front at roughly 8,000 km, a gap Khattar acknowledged directly.

India's metro story started small. Kolkata got the country's first line in 1984. By 2002, India had just 25 km of track across Kolkata and the newly opened Delhi Metro, according to the Times of India. When Prime Minister Narendra Modi took office in 2014, the network stood at 245 km across five cities.

Since then it has grown to 1,170 km across 26 cities, an increase of nearly 5x in just over a decade. The Times of India reports the government's own figures show the average pace of new track commissioning rose from about 0.68 km a month before 2014 to a much faster clip afterward, though the outlet did not specify the post-2014 monthly rate.

A Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs status report from July 2026 put the operational metro and regional rapid transit network at roughly 1,159 km, close to the 1,170 km figure Khattar cited after Indore's extension went live. News18 reports nearly 900 km more track is under construction or in advanced planning, meaning India doesn't need to build much more to pass the US total.

The Indore extension itself, built for ₹2,850 crore, stretched the city's commercial metro route from 6 km to 17 km, adding 10 new stations and pushing daily trips past 80, according to NDTV and Sarkaritel. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said the line will eventually reach Ujjain.

Khattar's comparison is a straightforward measure of total operational route length, not ridership, network age, or how many people actually use these systems day to day. The US network he's measuring against includes decades-old systems like the New York City subway and DC Metro. None of the sources reviewed compare usage figures, so the "overtake" claim should be read for what it is: India adding more physical kilometers of track than America currently has in service, projected two years out.

The national trend line masks a messier picture at the state level. In Hyderabad, a ₹38,595-crore, 122.9-km Phase II expansion remains stuck, according to The Hindu. Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has been pushing New Delhi to approve a state takeover of the existing 69.2-km Phase I network from L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad Ltd and form a joint venture with the Centre for the next phase.

The holdup is financial and regulatory. An earlier plan to secure a ₹13,527-crore loan from the Indian Railway Finance Corporation collapsed after the Ministry of Railways reportedly determined IRFC's mandate covers new infrastructure, not refinancing existing assets, according to The Hindu. Officials told the paper it's unclear how that limitation got missed in the first place.

Telangana is now trying again, with SBI Capital Markets exploring a roughly ₹13,500-crore soft loan through entities based in Gujarat's GIFT City. A June meeting between Reddy and Union Ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw, G. Kishan Reddy and Khattar produced a roadmap involving a merger of Hyderabad Metro Rail with Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited, followed by the Centre taking a 50% stake. The Hindu reports it remains unclear whether all the relevant Central ministries have formally signed off.

Delhi is further along on its next build-out. Under Phase IV, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation plans an 8-km elevated corridor from Lajpat Nagar to Saket G Block with eight stations, according to India.com. It will run India's first three-coach metro trains, carrying about 900 passengers per trip at 300 per coach, and Lajpat Nagar is set to become a transit hub linking the new Golden Line with the existing Violet and Pink lines.

Whether India actually crosses the US total on Khattar's two-year timeline depends less on national ambition than on cases like Hyderabad getting unstuck. That project alone represents 122.9 km of planned track still waiting on financing and inter-ministry sign-off, more than half of the 216-km gap Khattar says India needs to close.
