France's Wildfire Evacuations Top 250,000 as Gironde Fire Nears Bordeaux, New Front Opens Near Valencia

Since French officials confirmed Friday, July 24 that the Gironde wildfire had cut a major highway and rail lines into Bordeaux, the crisis has grown rather than eased. By Sunday, July 26, French authorities had ordered more than 250,000 people out of the danger zone in southwestern France, according to Reuters. One of the largest peacetime evacuations in French history, according to French authorities cited by Reuters.

Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu called it "a historic situation" late Saturday, July 25, according to Reuters. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez wrote on X Sunday that "the situation remains very unfavourable" across French fire zones.

More than 5,200 firefighters, soldiers and gendarmes have been mobilized against the Gironde blaze, Reuters reported. The fire has grown so intense it is generating its own wind patterns, according to reporting cited by ZeroHedge. Land burned in the region is now roughly four times the area of Paris, Reuters reported.

The village of Cestas, near Bordeaux's southwestern edge, was described as "deserted" Sunday, with only a handful of its 17,000 residents refusing to leave, according to Mayor Jerome Steffe, who spoke to French broadcaster BFMTV and was quoted by Reuters. "This fire is unpredictable and each time we think we've got on top of it unfortunately it surprises us in the worst possible way," Steffe said. "Right now, it's impossible to say where the fire will end up."

Homes in the coastal village of Le Porge were gutted, according to AFPTV aerial footage cited by Reuters. A separate fire in the neighboring Landes region, which forced roughly 30,000 evacuations, is being "better contained but not yet stopped," the local prefecture told Reuters.

Spain's fires spread to a second front near Valencia

In Spain, winds pushed the wildfire near Madrid southward Sunday, away from the capital for now, but that has forced fresh evacuations of villages in the fire's new path, Reuters reported. Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said wind speed, forecast to subside, would determine how firefighting efforts go Sunday, adding that "weather conditions have been extremely difficult."

A new fire front has opened hundreds of kilometers away near Valencia, forcing at least 15,000 additional evacuations, according to Reuters. That adds to roughly 60,000 people already evacuated from the fire zone near Madrid. Valencia's regional president, Juanfran Perez Llorca, told reporters late Saturday that "the fire is beyond our capacity to extinguish." Pilar Bernabe, the central government's delegate to Valencia, wrote on X that "the night was very intense."

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said fires had burned about 20,000 hectares over a 24-hour span, with more than 105,000 people affected nationwide and two deaths reported, according to ZeroHedge's aggregation of the figures. Both France and Spain have formally requested European Union assistance, Channels Television reported.

Evacuees describe chaos and uncertainty

Reuters spoke with evacuees at a makeshift shelter in Bordeaux, capturing the human toll behind the statistics. Mohammed Laabar, a 35-year-old truck driver from Salaunes, fled with his wife and three-year-old son when the fire threatened his hometown Friday, only to have shifting winds carry smoke into Bordeaux hours later. "We'll see this more often in the future, that's for sure," he told Reuters.

Bernadette, 71, who declined to give her surname, told Reuters she evacuated her home in Lège-Cap-Ferret in the middle of the night with "very little time to leave" and has since moved twice more as the fire spread. "I'm going to scream," she said.

German tourist Henri Sauter, 37, described ashes falling into his family's dinner in Cap Ferret before they fled through heavy traffic on the peninsula's single access road. At one point he saw flames roughly 300 meters away, he told Reuters.

Bordeaux's wine industry has so far avoided direct damage. Wine expert Nicolle Croft told CNN, as cited by ZeroHedge, that vineyards near the fires remain unaffected and grapes haven't yet grown large enough to absorb smoke, a risk winemakers call "smoke taint." Harvest doesn't begin until early September, Croft said, leaving a window before the 2026 vintage is at risk.

The larger question is whether winds forecast to subside actually do, both in Spain and France, since officials in both countries have repeatedly said the fires' behavior has outpaced predictions. France's Gironde fire has already forced the cancellation of the final competitive stage of the Tour de France, a decision organizers made July 25 as the blaze approached the race route. Reuters reported nearly 6,000 excess deaths in France tied to the record heatwave that preceded the fires, though that toll reflects the broader heat event rather than the fires themselves.
