FBI Confirms Murder Rate Hit Lowest Level Since 1956. Nobody Agrees Why.

Since the FBI's preliminary 2025 numbers first circulated earlier this year, the agency has now released the full Uniform Crime Report, and the final figures confirm the early read: murder and nonnegligent manslaughter fell 18.1% from 2024 to 2025, putting the national murder rate at 4.1 per 100,000 people, tied with 1955 and 1956 for the lowest ever recorded, according to the FBI.

It's the largest year-to-year decline in violent crime since the FBI began estimating national crime rates in 1936, the agency said. Robbery fell 18.5%. Burglary dropped 15.8%. Motor vehicle theft fell 22.7%. Rape declined 7.6%. Aggravated assault dropped 7.2%. Reported hate crimes fell about 7%, though the FBI's release didn't break down which groups were targeted, according to CBS News.

President Trump touted the numbers Friday at the Nassau County Police Academy on Long Island, flanked by FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche. "I'm thrilled to announce that the FBI has just released a new Uniform Crime Report showing that in 2025 we achieved the single largest reduction in violent crime in American history," Trump said, according to CNN. He put a number on it too: "over 3,100 fewer murders than the year before I took office."

Patel framed the report as proof his shakeup of the bureau is working. "This FBI will continue to stack these wins for the American people under President Trump and always Back the Blue every step of the way," he said, according to Breitbart. He also credited FBI agents with helping arrest eight of the top 10 most wanted fugitives on the planet over the last 16 months, according to CBS News.

The White House drew a straight line from the numbers to Trump's immigration crackdown. Trump told the crowd that under "open borders policy," 25 million people entered the country, including "over 3,000 murderers," and tied last year's crime numbers to that period, according to Breitbart. White House spokeswoman Lauren Bis told the Epoch Times "President Trump promised to make America safe again, and the data proves he has done just that," and added a jab at Democrats over "Defund-the-Police" policies, according to Fox News.

The trend predates Trump's second term, and researchers who study this for a living won't hand him the credit.

Adam Gelb, president of the nonpartisan Council on Criminal Justice, put it bluntly after his own group's July report found homicides down 18% across 30 cities in the first half of 2026. "The homicide drop is historic and crystal clear. But right now, what's driving it is about as clear as a glass of milk," Gelb said, according to CNN. He noted the decline is happening "in cities with very different public safety strategies, economic conditions, and political leadership," which he said should make people "cautious about handing credit to any one leader, party, policy, or program before the evidence catches up."

Trump's team has an obvious political incentive to claim full credit. The murder rate has been falling every year since it spiked in 2022, well before Trump took office in January 2025, according to CNN and NBC News reporting cited by Breitbart. Crime analyst Jeff Asher of AH Datalytics, an independent data firm with no stake in either party's narrative, called it "the third straight year of a record drop in murder" and said "the data for 2026 points to a continued large drop this year," according to CBS News. That's a trend line bigger than any one administration.

At the same time, the local numbers Trump's team points to are real and specific. A Major Cities Chiefs Association survey of 66 large cities found homicides down 17.2% in the first half of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025, according to the Epoch Times. Washington, D.C. saw homicides fall 43.9%. Newark dropped 64.7%. Boston fell 52.4%. Those declines came after Trump deployed the National Guard to multiple cities, including D.C., under what the White House calls the "Safe and Beautiful" initiative. Patel has said D.C. is safer than it's been in decades because of that deployment, according to Fox News. Whether the Guard deployment caused the drop or simply coincided with a national trend already in motion is the question Gelb says the data can't yet answer.

One number cuts against the celebratory framing. Assaults on law enforcement officers hit a 10-year high in 2025, with 90,178 officers assaulted in the line of duty, according to the FBI data reported by CBS News. CBS noted it's unclear whether that spike connects to the administration's stepped-up immigration and crime enforcement. CBS was also the only outlet in this batch to mention two specific, high-profile incidents from the immigration crackdown: the shooting deaths of U.S. citizens Renee Good and Alex Pretti during federal operations in Minneapolis, which remain a point of public controversy. Fox News and Breitbart's coverage of the crime report didn't mention those cases at all.

The open question heading into 2027 is whether the 2026 numbers, which Asher expects to keep falling, will settle the causation debate or just deepen it. The Council on Criminal Justice is expected to publish its full-year 2026 comparison sometime after January, which will be the next real test of whether this is a Trump effect, a post-pandemic normalization, or something researchers haven't fully identified yet.
