Crypto Faces Democratic Probes of Trump Ties; Arkham Data Shows Trump Media Moved $343M in Bitcoin

Crypto Faces Democratic Probes of Trump Ties; Arkham Data Shows Trump Media Moved $343M in Bitcoin
Since Democrats won both chambers on Nov. 3, the crypto industry has been bracing for investigations into the Trump family's digital-asset income, led by incoming Senate Banking Chair Elizabeth Warren. Separately, blockchain tracker Arkham shows Trump Media moved 4,259 BTC to Crypto.com, and noteholders can demand roughly $1 billion in cash on Nov. 30.

Since Democrats won control of Congress in the Nov. 3 midterms, crypto's two-year run of friendly treatment in Washington has given way to a defensive posture. The industry's lobbyists now expect to spend much of the next Congress answering questions about the president's family business, not passing bills.

The Democratic oversight plan

Incoming Senate Banking Chair Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) has pledged to focus on alleged deals between the sector and President Trump. Max Raymond, a director of financial policy, put it this way: "Democrats' priorities starting off are going to be oversight hearings to get to the bottom of some of his dealings there."

Rep. Robert Garcia is expected to lead House Oversight and look into the family's businesses, including World Liberty Financial. House Financial Services Democrats, led by Rep. Maxine Waters, have also pressed on the TRUMP memecoin, World Liberty Financial and the USD1 stablecoin.

The groundwork is already laid. Garcia's committee published a January 2026 report on the family's digital-asset income, covering trading fees, token purchases and interest earned on assets backing stablecoins. The committee framed its findings as allegations of conflicts and corruption.

None of this has subpoena power behind it yet. Democrats take the committee gavels when the new Congress convenes in January.

What Warren is asking

Warren's Sept. 15 letter to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Attorney General Todd Blanche asked them to investigate national security risks tied to World Liberty Financial and its affiliates. It renewed requests she made in November 2025 and May 2026.

The letter pointed to reports that a firm called Aqua 1 spent $100 million on World Liberty tokens. Warren cited reporting that links Aqua 1 to Guren "Bobby" Zhou, a businessman reportedly under investigation for money laundering in Britain.

She asked whether gaps in anti-money-laundering rules or enforcement could let Trump-linked ventures profit from illicit activity. The letter did not establish that the token purchases were money laundering. No agency has announced an investigation in response.

The money behind the Trump family's crypto income

A Reuters investigation found the Trump family made around $2.3 billion from crypto ventures between mid-2024 and April. That figure is the main reason the subject is politically radioactive, and it applies to the president's family, not to some abstract industry.

The industry, for its part, was not relying on Trump alone. Reuters found crypto spent roughly $176 million across more than 100 midterm races, with Fairshake, its largest super PAC, leading the effort. Fairshake said 53 of the 58 candidates it backed in primaries or special elections this year won.

The advocacy group Public Citizen said crypto was the single-biggest corporate spender in federal races in 2026. Strategists told Reuters the goal was a bipartisan bench of allies who can carry the agenda after Trump leaves office. "It's an investment in the future," said Colin McLaren of the Solana Policy Institute, which has given $4.9 million to the midterms.

That plan now meets a Congress where the party in charge has picked the industry's Trump ties as its first target. Bloomberg reports the new majority makes comprehensive legislation harder to pass on the industry's preferred terms.

Trump Media's bitcoin transfer

Arkham data also surfaced as the probes took shape. Arkham, a blockchain analytics firm, shows Trump Media-linked wallets sent 4,259 BTC to Crypto.com in two batches of more than 2,000 each, worth about $343 million at recent prices. That is roughly 30% of the 14,139 BTC the company previously held, including pledged coins.

The coins came from wallets labeled as collateral for convertible notes. Trump Media's earlier filings identified 4,260.73 BTC as that collateral.

A Nov. 2 company filing disclosed that noteholders can require cash repayment on Nov. 30. If every eligible holder does, the company would owe approximately $1 billion. Trump Media warned that refinancing or other measures might not be enough, and that it could then be forced to sell bitcoin or other digital assets.

The transfer is not proof of a sale. Trump Media has moved coins to Crypto.com for custody and trading-related purposes before, including in May and August. The company has not confirmed that it sold anything or explained why these coins moved.

The timing alongside the Democratic probes has not been explained. No source has linked the two.

What comes next

The first hard date is Nov. 30, when Trump Media's noteholders can demand repayment and the company's own filing says a bitcoin sale is possible. The second is January, when Warren and Garcia get their committees and can start demanding documents instead of writing letters.
