Altcoins Lose About $200 Billion Since Late September as 70% of Binance Tokens Fall Below 200-Day Average
CryptoQuant analyst Darkfost says altcoin market value has dropped roughly $200 billion since late September, wiping out about two-thirds of the late-summer rally. Around 70% of Binance-listed altcoins now sit below their 200-day moving average, up from about 10% a month ago. Bitcoin, near $76,000, is hovering a few thousand dollars above its own 200-day line.

The late-summer altcoin rally has largely been erased.

CryptoQuant analyst Darkfost, in a Quicktake dated Nov. 7, 2026, said the market value of altcoins, with Bitcoin and stablecoins stripped out, has fallen by about $200 billion. That segment had added roughly $320 billion between mid-August and late September. The drop since then has given back roughly two-thirds of those gains.

From 90% above the line to 70% below it

The breadth of the move is the sharper number. Darkfost's data on Binance-listed altcoins shows a full reversal in under three months.

  • Mid-August: 82% of those tokens traded below their 200-day moving average.
  • Early October: about 10% were below it, meaning nearly 90% were above.
  • Early November: about 70% are below it, with the figure creeping back toward 80%.

The 200-day moving average is a widely watched long-term trend gauge. A token that falls under it is typically read as having entered a bearish phase.

A month ago most coins were rising together. Now most are falling together.

The macro backdrop Darkfost points to

Darkfost ties the slide to several pressures landing at once. He cites rate hikes from the Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank and the Bank of England, ongoing geopolitical and trade tensions, and uncertainty after the U.S. midterm elections.

He also points to equities. By his figures, the Nasdaq is down 14% from its recent peak and the S&P 500 is down 6%, with technology stocks leading the selloff.

The stock market had a rough Thursday, Nov. 5. Breitbart reported that the S&P 500 fell more than 3% in morning trading, a day after a post-election rally, and that the Nasdaq Composite dropped 4% to 5%. The same report said Nvidia, Broadcom and Oracle each fell about 9%, and that AI-compute providers CoreWeave, Nebius and IREN dropped between 14% and 19%.

Breitbart attributed the selloff to investor fears that Democratic gains in the midterms would slow the build-out of AI data centers. It reported that Democrats won majorities in both chambers of Congress. That causal explanation is the outlet's account of investor motives. Darkfost's analysis does not make that link specifically.

Altcoins often trade like a higher-volatility version of tech stocks, which is why a tech slump tends to spill into crypto.

A labor market that is not cracking

The economic data is not uniformly weak. The Labor Department reported that initial jobless claims fell by 6,000 to 189,000 for the week ending Oct. 31, matching the 57-year low set this past summer. The four-week average slipped below 195,000.

Challenger, Gray and Christmas counted fewer than 44,000 announced job cuts in October, down 71% from a year earlier. Job openings rose above 7.5 million in September.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics scheduled the October payrolls report for Nov. 6. Markets had estimated 65,000 new jobs and a 4.2% unemployment rate. A strong labor market is one reason central banks may feel free to keep tightening, which is the pressure Darkfost flags for speculative assets.

Bitcoin and what comes next

Bitcoin has not escaped the pressure. It was trading around $75,720 in recent market data and near $76,000 in more recent trading. Its 200-day moving average sits at $73,205, roughly $2,500 below the recent price. That line is now the downside level traders are watching.

Darkfost himself cautions against reading the data as a one-way bet. He said extreme readings like this have sometimes come before trend reversals, because the holders who wanted out may already be out. He also said there is no guarantee a bottom is close in the current environment.

The bearish read is the immediate one. A market in which roughly 70% of tracked altcoins sit below a closely followed trend line can discourage new buying.

The next test is whether the share of Binance altcoins below the 200-day line keeps climbing toward 80%, or whether Bitcoin holds above $73,205 and stops the slide from spreading.
