Chevron's Downstream Earnings Quadruple to $4.9 Billion as Record Refinery Runs Offset a Weaker Oil Business

Chevron's Downstream Earnings Quadruple to $4.9 Billion as Record Refinery Runs Offset a Weaker Oil Business
Chevron's full third-quarter filing shows the profit jump came from refining, not drilling. Downstream earnings rose to $4.9 billion from $1.1 billion, while upstream production fell. With diesel near $6.32 a gallon, according to AAA, the company's own warning about winter inventories is the next test.

Since the Iran war began tightening fuel markets, each oil major's quarterly report has told a slightly different story. Chevron's full third-quarter release on Friday, Oct. 30, shows its windfall came mostly from the pump side of the business, not the wellhead.

The company reported earnings of $9.9 billion, or $5.06 a share, against $3.5 billion a year earlier. Adjusted earnings were $10.4 billion, or $5.28 a share. The average analyst estimate from LSEG was $4.89.

The quarter was weaker than the one before it. Second-quarter earnings were $12.1 billion. Year to date, Chevron has earned $24.2 billion, up from $9.5 billion in the first nine months of 2025.

Refining carried the quarter

Downstream earnings hit $4.9 billion, up from $1.1 billion a year ago and slightly above the second quarter. U.S. downstream earnings climbed to $3.6 billion from $638 million. Chevron attributed the gain to higher margins on refined product sales.

The company's U.S. refineries processed a record 1.09 million barrels of crude a day. Utilization was 98%. Diesel and jet fuel yields rose by more than 10%.

The margins came from a supply shock. Attacks on refineries in Russia and the Middle East have cut global diesel supply, and U.S. refiners ran harder to fill the gap.

Upstream slipped

Upstream earnings were $5.7 billion, up from $3.3 billion a year ago but down about 30% from $8.2 billion in the second quarter. The average Brent spot price was $97 a barrel, against $104 in the second quarter and $69 a year earlier.

Net oil-equivalent production was 3.98 million barrels a day, down from 4.09 million a year ago. Chevron blamed lower entitlements from higher prices and the Middle East conflict. Record output in Australia and one month of Venezuela production partly offset the decline.

U.S. upstream production topped 2 million barrels of oil equivalent a day for a fifth straight quarter.

Timing effects reduced earnings by $1.58 billion in the quarter. A $160 million legal reserve and a $110 million impairment were also included.

Cash, Venezuela and the dividend

Cash flow from operations was $16.0 billion, up from $9.4 billion a year ago. Chevron cut total debt by $3.5 billion in the quarter. The board declared a quarterly dividend of $1.78 a share, payable Dec. 10 to holders of record on Nov. 18.

Chevron's Venezuela joint ventures plan to invest $7 billion over the next five years. The company said it now includes those results following an accounting-related change during the quarter. It also signed agreements to cut Bakken midstream costs by about 50%.

"We're reinvesting to bring more energy to a supply-constrained market," CEO Mike Wirth said in the release.

Shares rose roughly 1% to 2% in premarket trading Friday. U.S. markets are closed for the weekend.

The political collision

The results land days before the midterms, with fuel prices a live issue. AAA put the Q3 national average for gasoline at $4.12 a gallon, up 96 cents from a year earlier and the highest on record for the quarter. Diesel is about $6.32, up 71% over the year, according to AAA. Moody's Analytics estimates U.S. households have paid $1,184 more on average since the war began.

At a campaign event in Georgia on Oct. 24, President Donald Trump said: "Our country is making hundreds of billions of dollars because of what's happened in the Middle East... We're making a freaking fortune."

A White House official defended the remarks. "The President is pointing to the United States' position as the world's top producer and exporter of oil," the official said. "By unleashing American energy dominance, he has strengthened our national security and made our country wealthier."

The same president demanded in August, after Chevron's $12.1 billion second quarter, that Chevron and ExxonMobil cut retail gasoline prices. The Q3 filing shows no sign that happened. Chevron's refining margins are the spread between crude cost and what it sells fuel for.

The Guardian's Harris poll found 36% of voters name the rising cost of living as the single most important issue this election.

What Wirth is warning about

On Oct. 7, Wirth warned that a U.S. diesel export ban would risk worsening the global supply situation. He called global inventories heading into winter "very serious."

That is a policy argument from a company with a direct financial stake, and it cuts against the political pressure to hold fuel at home. No export ban has been announced. Whether Washington leans on refiners for lower prices or restricts exports as heating season arrives will decide whether the record refinery margins in this report carry into the fourth quarter.
