AMD Crosses $1 Trillion Market Cap for the First Time as Chip Stocks Rally and Oil Retreats

AMD Crosses $1 Trillion Market Cap for the First Time as Chip Stocks Rally and Oil Retreats
AMD joined the trillion-dollar club Monday, its shares up nearly 10% on a five-day, 24% run, as Intel, Arm and Qualcomm rallied alongside it and oil prices backed off. The move comes one day after Wall Street was debating whether 34-times-earnings AI stocks are a bubble, and AMD's own forward valuation just got a lot richer.

Since Sunday's debate over whether AI stocks trading at 34 times earnings signal a dot-com style bust, the market answered Monday with a straight-up chip rally that pushed Advanced Micro Devices past $1 trillion in market capitalization for the first time.

AMD shares hit an intraday record of $613.92, up about 9.6% to 10%, according to Dow Jones Market Data as reported by Morningstar. The stock touched $1.002 trillion in market value before fluctuating around the threshold through the session. Friday's close was around $557, per Tom's Hardware, meaning the stock has now added roughly 24% over five straight trading sessions and more than 180% year-to-date, according to Quartz.

AMD becomes the fourth U.S. chipmaker to top $1 trillion, joining Nvidia, Broadcom and Micron, according to KSL News. Count global peers TSMC, Samsung and SK Hynix, and Morningstar's Elias Schisgall put AMD at the seventh chipmaker overall to touch the mark. SK Hynix hit $1 trillion briefly in May before falling back into the hundreds of billions, per Morningstar, a reminder that touching the milestone and holding it are different things.

AMD is still a distant second to Nvidia, which sits at roughly $5.4 trillion, according to multiple sources including Yahoo Finance and KSL.

The Meta connection

Part of Monday's rally traces to Meta Platforms, whose Muse AI agent has topped Apple's free iPhone app charts for several days running, according to Bloomberg reporting cited by Quartz. Meta shares jumped as much as 8.6%, per Yahoo Finance, and Meta is AMD's second-biggest customer, accounting for roughly 5.5% of AMD's revenue, Quartz reported. Investors read heavy Muse usage as a signal that demand for the chips running agentic AI workloads isn't slowing down.

Intel rode the same wave, jumping as much as 12% to 14% depending on the source, while Arm Holdings gained as much as 14% and Qualcomm rose 4.5%, according to KSL News. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index advanced more than 4% on the day. Intel's market cap sits around $648 billion, still well short of the $1 trillion club, per Tom's Hardware.

Thomas Hayes, chairman at Great Hill Capital LLC, told Reuters (via KSL) that "money is moving back into the AI trade" because investors increasingly see AI spending as the one segment that can keep growing through a Federal Reserve-driven slowdown. "AMD is representative of that," Hayes said.

The valuation question nobody's settled

AMD now trades at about 41 times forward 12-month earnings, according to KSL's Reuters-sourced reporting, below its 10-year average of 44 but far above Nvidia's own forward multiple of 16.3 times. That gap is the crux of the ongoing bubble argument. AMD forecast quarterly revenue above Wall Street's estimates last month, KSL noted, but the results still fell short of what investors had been hoping for. The bar for AI stocks keeps rising faster than the numbers.

The fundamentals behind the rally are real, not just sentiment. AMD's data center segment generated $6.7 billion in the second quarter, up 107% year-over-year and now 58% of total company revenue, according to VideoCardz. First-quarter data center revenue was $5.78 billion, up 57%, per Quartz. CEO Lisa Su has told investors she's targeting a doubling of data center revenue by 2027.

That AI focus has come at a cost on the consumer side. VideoCardz noted AMD has not launched new Zen 6 Ryzen processors or a new Radeon GPU architecture in 2026, leaning instead on refreshed older chips like the Zen 4-based Ryzen 7 7700X3D. Gaming and PC enthusiasts are effectively subsidizing the AI pivot with a quiet product year.

The rest of the tape

Oil is the other half of Monday's story. Brent crude dropped about 3.4% to $100.30 after flirting with $110 last week, according to Yahoo Finance, as Saudi Aramco loaded seven tankers over the weekend despite the East-West pipeline being out of commission for a month. The 10-year Treasury yield eased more than 3 basis points to 4.96%, giving tech stocks room to run. Bitcoin climbed back above $85,000 for the first time since January, Yahoo Finance reported, adding to the bullish mood without directly moving equity indexes.

Two events this week could reset all of it. Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled to visit the U.S. from September 23 to 25 for talks covering tariffs, AI and critical minerals, following what Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called a "very successful" weekend session with Vice Premier He Lifeng, according to Yahoo Finance. If oil prices reverse or the Xi meetings go badly, the same rally that just minted AMD's trillion-dollar valuation could unwind as fast as it built. Whether AMD holds the threshold longer than SK Hynix did in May is the open question the market will answer in the coming weeks.
