Southwest Rapid Rewards overhaul starts Jan. 1: Companion Pass moves to new Platinum tier, card sign-up bonuses stop counting

Southwest Rapid Rewards overhaul starts Jan. 1: Companion Pass moves to new Platinum tier, card sign-up bonuses stop counting
Southwest is replacing A-List and A-List Preferred with Silver, Gold and a new Platinum tier on Jan. 1, 2027. The old route to a Companion Pass, which let card sign-up bonuses count toward the 135,000-point threshold, is closing. Executives say the changes are meant to keep top-tier fliers spending, and loyalists are not happy.

Southwest Airlines is rebuilding Rapid Rewards, and the biggest change hits the perk its fans love most: the Companion Pass.

Starting Jan. 1, 2027, A-List becomes Silver and A-List Preferred becomes Gold. A new top tier, Platinum, will carry unlimited Companion Pass trips. Southwest's press release says the program is "becoming even more rewarding" with "a simpler qualification structure."

What changes for the Companion Pass

Under the old rules, a traveler earned the pass by collecting 135,000 eligible points in a calendar year. Credit card welcome bonuses counted toward that total. That was the well-known shortcut.

That shortcut ends. Card bonuses will no longer count. Instead, every Southwest Rapid Rewards credit card from Chase, including the entry-level Plus card for the first time, will earn one Tier Qualifying Point for each dollar spent.

Current Companion Pass holders keep their benefits. Passes earned in 2026 stay valid through Dec. 31, 2027.

There is a consolation prize. Southwest is adding "Milestone Rewards," which hand out benefits before a member reaches a new tier. Before Silver, members can pick points or seat certificates. Between Gold and Platinum, a milestone unlocks three Companion Pass trips, each usable one-way or round-trip.

The earn-rate cut the press release skipped

The travel site Upgraded Points found a less visible change in the program FAQ. Today A-List Preferred members earn 28x points per dollar on a Choice Extra fare, and A-List members earn 17.5x. From January, status holders will earn a flat-rate bonus regardless of tier.

Upgraded Points calculates that an A-List Preferred member booking Choice Extra will earn 10x instead of 28x. The site says Southwest left that out of its press releases. The figure appears only in the FAQ answer on how many points members earn per fare in 2027.

Why Southwest says it is doing this

A leaked employee briefing obtained by the blog View from the Wing shows how executives explain it internally. Chief Operating Officer Andrew Watterson led the session with Chief Customer and Brand Officer Tony Roach and Rapid Rewards vice president Nandika Suri.

One executive in the briefing described the problem this way: "We had customers that would get to A-List Preferred and just stop spending because they already got the top status." Platinum and the in-between rewards are meant to give those customers another target.

Platinum also adds earlier boarding, a third checked bag and a higher flight earning bonus, according to the same briefing.

CEO Bob Jordan framed it as strategy on the third-quarter earnings call. "We don't view these as standalone products," he said. They are "a connected loyalty ecosystem" meant to grow "both loyalty and the economics of the program over time."

The customer reaction

Many Southwest loyalists are unconvinced. NY Post coverage cited an X user calling the overhaul "the end of an era."

Airline blogger Cranky Flier, quoted in View from the Wing, argued Southwest could have changed its products without dropping its playful branding. His verdict: "It feels like this could have been written about pretty much any airline's loyalty program."

Brian Riley, director of credit at Javelin Strategy & Research, tied the move to a wider shift. Southwest dropped open seating and free checked bags, and he said the airline's strategy change in January 2026 signaled more to come. His open question: "whether new fees, seating products and loyalty revenue can produce durable margins without weakening customer loyalty."

Riley also noted that Southwest outperformed American in 2025 and significantly outpaced JetBlue, though its margins remain well below Delta and United.

The money behind it

Southwest reported third-quarter 2026 operating revenue of $8.4 billion, up 21.2% from a year earlier. Net income was $270 million, even though fuel costs rose $821 million.

Loyalty is where the company wants more. Southwest offers five Chase co-branded cards with annual fees from $99 to $299. Jordan said a new premium card tied to airport lounges would let Southwest "participate in that segment for the first time," calling premium cards "among the strongest performing products in the co-brand market."

What arrives when

  • November 2026: Members can redeem points for rental cars through Southwest's car-booking platform.
  • Jan. 1, 2027: New tiers, Milestone Rewards and the one-TQP-per-dollar card rule take effect.
  • Spring 2027: Points earning and redemption begin with Icelandair, Etihad Airways and China Airlines, according to Airline Geeks.
  • Later in 2027: Members can use points for seat selection on Southwest flights.

On Thursday, Southwest named its lounge network "Southwest Icon Lounge," built with Chase. Construction is underway in Nashville, Austin, Baltimore and Honolulu. Jordan said the openings are planned for the fourth quarter of 2027, with at least seven more locations planned. Access will come through a new Chase card that Southwest has not yet detailed.
