OpenAI Puts GPT-6 Models on Google Cloud, Reaching All Three Major U.S. Clouds

OpenAI Puts GPT-6 Models on Google Cloud, Reaching All Three Major U.S. Clouds
OpenAI and Google Cloud announced today, Oct. 21, that GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna are rolling out in private preview in Google's Model Garden, with broader availability promised in the coming weeks. OpenAI's models now sit on Microsoft, Amazon and Google clouds, six months after Microsoft's exclusive license ended. Microsoft, Amazon and Alphabet all report quarterly results next week.

OpenAI is selling its newest models through Google Cloud, a company that competes with it head-on in AI. The two companies announced the arrangement today, Oct. 21.

The models are GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna. Google Cloud says they are rolling out in private preview to select enterprise customers in its Model Garden, with more access coming soon. Customers can also connect their local Codex CLI and Desktop workflows to Google's Gemini platform for inference, starting today.

Broader availability is not here yet. OpenAI and Google say the models will reach Google's Antigravity coding tool and its Gemini for business product in the coming weeks.

How the deal works

The models will be sold through Google Cloud Marketplace. Google says all usage lands on a single Google Cloud invoice, draws down a customer's existing cloud spending commitments, and counts toward Flexible Savings Plans.

That last detail is the one buyers will feel. A company that has already committed millions to Google can spend that money on OpenAI without a separate vendor contract.

Google also pitched the deal to regulated industries. Customers can run the models under Google Cloud's access controls and data governance tools.

Michael Gerstenhaber, a Google Cloud vice president, wrote that Google Cloud is "now the only hyperscale cloud provider offering access to all three leading closed source LLMs," alongside more than 200 first-party, third-party and open models. That is Google's own claim about its competitors' catalogs. The companies have not published figures on expected sales.

The end of Microsoft's exclusive

The timeline is short. OpenAI's exclusive license arrangement with Microsoft expired in April. Amazon moved quickly to host OpenAI models on its Bedrock service, and Google is the latest to follow.

Microsoft's early, close partnership with OpenAI was a selling point for its Azure cloud. That advantage narrows as the same models show up on rival platforms. Gokhshtein Media's markets desk argued that investors should press Microsoft on how much Azure's AI revenue depends on OpenAI and whether the diversification reflects hedging or ordinary risk management. Microsoft has not said how it views the Google arrangement.

Rivals who need each other

OpenAI was founded in 2015 partly as a counterweight to the concentration of AI research at Google. The two now compete in core models and in search.

Compute demand has pushed them together anyway. OpenAI finalized a deal to use Google Cloud infrastructure in May 2025, and Google Cloud joined its supplier list that July, alongside Microsoft, Oracle and CoreWeave. OpenAI also began renting Google's custom TPU chips, a step away from reliance on Nvidia.

The new arrangement reverses the direction of the relationship. OpenAI was a Google Cloud customer buying capacity. Google Cloud's customers can now buy OpenAI's products.

Thomas Kurian, Google Cloud's CEO, has told Reuters the platform welcomes any model that is popular with developers. The Google blog post makes the same case: choice, with no architectural lock-in.

What each side gets

For OpenAI, this is distribution. Its own blog post says Google Cloud's AI investment has made it a destination for AI workloads and the developers building them. The company is pushing to grow its enterprise business beyond its consumer ChatGPT roots. It is also courting investors at a $1.4 trillion valuation and targeting an initial public offering, according to CNBC.

For Google, the deal puts a rival's best-known models next to its own Gemini line. In September, Google announced its next-generation Gemini 4 Argon model. Data from corporate card issuer Ramp shows most business spending on AI goes to OpenAI and Anthropic, though some corporate IT departments have integrated Gemini.

Google Cloud is also growing fast. Its annualized revenue growth accelerated to about 82% in the second quarter from 63% in the first, partly on demand for AI models and custom chips. Amazon posted second-quarter cloud growth of 37% and Microsoft 42%.

Neither OpenAI nor Amazon has disclosed how much business the Bedrock arrangement has generated. The same gap exists for Google.

What comes next

Amazon, Microsoft and Alphabet all report quarterly results next week. Whether any of them quantifies OpenAI-driven cloud revenue, or says when Google's private preview widens to general availability, will show how much of this deal is real demand and how much is a catalog entry.
