Multiple Teachers Across Five States Face Sexual Assault Charges Involving Students

The Cases, One by One

Maris Nichols, 25, a biology teacher at Alexander High School in Georgia, is facing 27 criminal charges tied to alleged sexual contact with at least seven students. A grand jury indicted her, and she appeared in court this week in Douglasville wearing jail overalls after prosecutors successfully argued her bond should be revoked. She had racked up 85 bond violations within a month, according to court documents reviewed by the New York Post, including alleged visits to locations where children were present.

Nichols was first arrested on May 8 on charges involving one student. A second arrest followed as more accusers came forward. Her 27 charges now include sexual exploitation of children, child cruelty, grooming, molestation, evidence tampering, and creating obscene material for children. At least two of her alleged victims were younger than 16, according to WSB.

The case has an additional layer. Nichols allegedly operated an OnlyFans account, and prosecutors allege some students used knowledge of that account to pressure her for better grades. Nichols is accused of then helping produce explicit content involving minors. Her arraignment is scheduled for August 4, with a hearing set for Monday.

In Palm Bay, Florida, Michelle Lynn Hancock, 41, a special education teacher at Heritage High School in Brevard County, was arrested after police responding to a suspicious vehicle reportedly found her having sex with a 17-year-old boy in her pickup truck. According to an arrest report obtained by People magazine, Hancock told police she had sex with the teen three or four times. The boy told investigators it was up to 20 times. Hancock allegedly met him through his older brother, a former student she had taught. She is charged with unlawful sexual activity with a minor, multiple counts of lewd or lascivious touching, and traveling to meet a minor. Florida's age of consent is 18. Brevard Public Schools confirmed to Florida Today that Hancock is no longer employed by the district.

In New Jersey, Julie Rizzitello, 37, a former teacher at Wall High School in Wall Township, pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree sexual assault, according to the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office. The assaults involved two separate students and spanned seven years: one incident in November 2017 and January 2018, when the victim was 17, and a second set of incidents in May and June 2024. Wall Township Police Chief Sean O'Halloran called it a "betrayal of trust, not only to the victims, but to the entire school community," according to the Coast Star.

Crime Online has tracked additional cases in the same period, including a former Washington Township, New Jersey, middle school teacher charged with sexual assault of a minor, a Kentucky teacher who pleaded not guilty to having sexual conversations with a student, a Wisconsin teacher's aide facing multiple counts of sexual assault of a child she allegedly began grooming when he was 12, and a former Wisconsin elementary school teacher who pleaded guilty to sexual contact with an 11-year-old.

The strongest concern critics raise is institutional: schools conduct background checks at hiring but are largely powerless to detect predatory grooming behavior that develops on the job. Teacher licensing boards in most states move slowly, and a teacher fired in one district can sometimes obtain a position in another before revocation is finalized. Advocates for stronger vetting argue that districts need clearer mandatory reporting timelines, faster license suspension authority, and better inter-district communication when a teacher is terminated for cause.

Most of these cases were caught because students or community members reported the behavior, not because the schools' internal systems flagged it. That is not an argument for abandoning institutional trust in schools overall. The overwhelming majority of teachers are not predators, and treating every educator as a suspect would destroy the profession. It is, however, an argument for faster, more transparent misconduct reporting pipelines between districts and state licensing boards.

These cases share a common structure: an adult in a position of authority, access enabled by the job, and a period of grooming before physical contact. In the Nichols case, the dynamic was reportedly inverted by students who allegedly leveraged knowledge of her OnlyFans account for grades. Prosecutors allege the sexual contact still occurred, and that Nichols then went further by allegedly producing obscene material involving minors. The alleged blackmail does not eliminate criminal liability; it adds to the complexity of the prosecution.

None of these cases involve disputed facts about whether the relationships occurred. Nichols is fighting the charges. Hancock has been charged but has not entered a plea as of reporting. Rizzitello has already admitted guilt in open court.

The open question in the Nichols case is the sentencing exposure she faces. Twenty-seven counts across multiple categories, including sexual exploitation of children, which carries federal-level penalties under Georgia law in some applications, puts her in a very different legal position than the other defendants. Her August 4 arraignment will be the next concrete marker in that case.
