Meta Hires MongoDB CEO CJ Desai to Run New Enterprise AI Unit, MongoDB Shares Sink

Meta Hires MongoDB CEO CJ Desai to Run New Enterprise AI Unit, MongoDB Shares Sink
Meta announced Monday it's launching Meta Enterprise Platform and hired sitting MongoDB CEO CJ Desai to run it, reporting directly to Mark Zuckerberg. MongoDB shares dropped as much as 18% to 25% on the news, its second CEO exit in under a year. Meta's own stock fell too, a sign investors are still waiting for proof the company's AI spending pays off.

Meta Platforms announced Monday, September 28, that it's launching a new business called Meta Enterprise Platform, and it poached the sitting CEO of MongoDB to run it.

Chirantan "CJ" Desai will join Meta as chief enterprise platform officer, reporting directly to CEO Mark Zuckerberg, according to a company announcement covered by CNBC, SiliconANGLE and Unite.ai. He's leaving MongoDB after less than a year in the top job.

MongoDB Stock Gets Hammered

Investors did not take the news well. CNBC, SiliconANGLE and KSL News reported MongoDB shares fell more than 18% following the announcement. TechStartups.com put the decline at roughly 25%, a figure that likely reflects the selloff deepening as the trading session went on rather than a separate event.

Either way, it's a significant one-day hit for a company that CNBC says has already shed nearly a quarter of its market value in 2026. Meta's own stock wasn't spared. CNBC reported Meta shares fell about 5%, while TechStartups.com pegged the drop at roughly 4%, suggesting investors aren't just worried about MongoDB but skeptical about what Meta is spending to build all this.

MongoDB's board named Dev Ittycheria, who ran the company for 11 years before handing the reins to Desai in November 2025, as interim president and CEO while it searches for a permanent replacement.

Not everyone on Wall Street is panicking. Brokerage Piper Sandler said in a note cited by KSL News that while Desai's exit is "disappointing," the firm believes MongoDB "remains well-positioned strategically" and views the stock reaction as "overdone." A single executive departure, even an abrupt one, doesn't automatically gut a company's underlying database business or its customer base.

Still, MongoDB investors have legitimate grounds to be rattled. This is the second unplanned leadership change at the top of the company in less than a year. Desai reportedly gave up his MongoDB pay package and severance to take the Meta job, according to a source familiar with the matter cited by CNBC. That suggests Meta made an offer large enough that walking away from guaranteed money made sense.

What Meta Is Actually Building

Meta's new unit will center on tools it's already built for its own advertising business, according to Zuckerberg's statement, distributed by Meta and quoted across CNBC, SiliconANGLE, Cryptonomist and Unite.ai. Zuckerberg said Meta Enterprise Platform will lean on "strengths that few other companies have: advanced models, leading agents, large-scale infrastructure, and years of working closely with many businesses."

The initial lineup includes Muse, Meta's personal AI agent that launched earlier this month and, per KSL News, has been described by analysts as potentially the biggest U.S. app launch since ChatGPT debuted in November 2022. CNBC reported Muse has already overtaken ChatGPT as the top free app on Apple's iOS App Store. The platform also includes Meta Business Agent, a WhatsApp-based customer service chatbot detailed by SiliconANGLE, plus developer tools Muse API and Muse Code.

Notably, Meta's flagship open-source Llama models are absent from the enterprise pitch, according to The New Stack. Meta is instead building its enterprise business around Muse, its newer closed model line, not the open-weight models it spent years positioning as an industry alternative to OpenAI and Google.

Desai brings a resume built for exactly this kind of sell. Before MongoDB he spent nearly eight years at ServiceNow, including as president and chief operating officer, and led product and engineering at Cloudflare, according to KSL News and Unite.ai. In his own statement, Desai said Meta's job is "turning Meta's AI stack into products and services that companies can deploy for their own businesses," and pointed to security features built into Muse, including a forthcoming isolation feature called Muse Confidential VM, described in Meta's own AI research materials.

The Bigger Bet

CNBC frames the hire as part of a broader shift, one where investors are demanding Meta show a payoff from its massive AI infrastructure spending, not just consumer engagement numbers. Whether a rebranded advertising tech stack, run by a database executive who's now switched jobs twice in under two years, becomes that payoff remains to be seen.

MongoDB's board has not said when it expects to name a permanent CEO. Until it does, the company is being run by the same executive, Ittycheria, who held the job for the eleven years before Desai's brief tenure began.
