Leaked Video of French Military Chaplain's 'Great Replacement' Sermon Triggers Disciplinary Action

A nearly year-old video of a French military chaplain mocking leftists and warning that French culture could be replaced has surfaced and drawn disciplinary action from the French government.

The footage shows Father Romain Ghandour addressing soldiers of the 3rd Marine Infantry Parachute Regiment (3e RPIMa) during a Saint-Michel Mass on October 7, 2025, at Saint-Michel Cathedral in Carcassonne. Saint-Michel is the patron saint of French airborne troops, which is why the regiment was gathered there.

Le Canard Enchaîné, the French satirical and investigative weekly known for breaking political scandals, published the clip in mid-September 2026, roughly eleven months after it was recorded.

What the chaplain actually said

Ghandour opened by invoking soldiers and civilians who died so France could remain, in his words, "a beautiful country," one where architects kept building "basilicas, cathedrals, housing, and fortified castles." He then pivoted: "instead of putting knights in them, we put incompetent people. We put people who eat seeds, people who lecture everyone, ideologues."

That line drew laughter from the soldiers. He followed it with the phrase that's now everywhere online: "Calm down, lefties! Quiet! Breathe through your nose!" The room erupted in laughter and applause, according to the video reviewed by Remix News and reproduced across multiple outlets including ZeroHedge and Modernity.

He closed with a warning about cultural displacement: "When you're thirsty, when you're hungry, it's the law of the strongest that reigns. And others will take the place of our values, of this freedom of speech, of action, of this equality between men, and of this fraternity, of this culture, of this society. Nature abhors a vacuum."

Ghandour never used the specific term "Great Replacement" in the recording. Commentators across the political spectrum have interpreted the remarks as an allusion to it anyway, a theory generally associated with the idea that mass immigration and demographic shifts are displacing native European populations.

Christophe Barthès, who was a municipal candidate at the time and has since been elected mayor of Carcassonne for the National Rally, was present in the pews that day.

The government's response

According to the French Ministry of the Armed Forces, in a statement given to HuffPost France, Ghandour is now facing a disciplinary procedure requested by Catherine Vautrin. The ministry confirmed the chaplain had been "called to order."

Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of the far-left La France Insoumise party, called the sermon racist and called for arrests, according to Breitbart. Breitbart's report doesn't specify whether Mélenchon wants the chaplain arrested, the soldiers charged, or something else, and no criminal charges have been filed against anyone involved as of this writing.

The institutional question

There is a real, non-partisan question in this story: should a state-funded military chaplain, addressing an entire regiment of active-duty soldiers in a formal Mass, be delivering what amounts to a political stump speech against "leftists"?

France's principle of laïcité, strict separation between state institutions and religious or political advocacy, exists precisely because critics on the left and center argue that armed forces personnel shouldn't be steered toward one political camp by a chaplain paid with public money. A reasonable person who isn't remotely on the far left could still look at soldiers cheering a priest telling them to shut down "lefties" and ask whether that crosses a line for a state employee addressing troops in uniform.

At the same time, defenders of the chaplain would note this was a homily about courage, heritage, and national memory delivered inside a religious service, not a campaign rally, and that Ghandour himself said he felt free to speak candidly because he believed no cameras were present. That is a meaningfully different context than a press conference or official military communication.

What is proven: the recording is authentic, the remarks were made as described, and the Ministry of the Armed Forces has confirmed disciplinary action is underway. What is alleged but unproven: that the sermon constitutes a criminal offense worth arrests, per Mélenchon, is his characterization and has not been tested in any French court or formal charge as of today.

Breitbart's framing that the government is punishing a priest for defending France diverges from the plainer institutional fact that state-employed chaplains speaking to troops in uniform operate under specific rules about political neutrality. These rules predate this controversy and would theoretically apply regardless of which direction the political remarks leaned.
