Kerala Landslides and Flash Floods Kill At Least 5 as Chief Minister Orders Hourly Monitoring

Heavy rain battered Kerala on Sunday, September 20, triggering landslides and flash floods that killed at least five people across three districts, with two more still missing as rescue crews searched through the night into Monday morning.

Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheesan ordered district collectors to conduct hourly assessments of the situation, according to a statement from his office reported by NDTV, India Today and Mathrubhumi English. Disaster Management Authority Commissioner Vigneswari IAS convened a meeting with the collectors of Idukki and Kottayam, and SMS weather alerts went out to residents in both districts.

What happened, district by district

In Idukki, a mudslide struck a temporary shed at a garlic farm in Kottakamboor near Vattavada around 3 p.m. Sunday, killing Balakrishnan, 50, and his sister Chinnu, 35, according to The News Minute and Gulf News, which cited Devikulam MLA F Raja. Balakrishnan's wife, Mariyamma, 40, was seriously injured and is being treated at Munnar Government Hospital. Devikulam Subcollector V M Arya told The News Minute that torrential rain likely triggered the slide, and authorities are also checking whether an electric pole that fell onto the shed caused electrocution. Post-mortem exams were scheduled for Monday.

Separately, Gulf News reported that a flash flood on the Chokkad River near the same area killed three people, a woman and two men whose bodies were recovered Sunday. The Times of India's initial report described tourists and locals stranded on rocks and trees near an Anganwadi in that same flood zone.

In Malappuram's Nilambur-Amarambalam area, a five-member group from Vandoor entered the Kottapuzha River for a bath when water levels suddenly rose, according to NDTV, India Today and Mathrubhumi English, all citing police accounts. One person was rescued by a local resident. Fire and rescue crews recovered two bodies, and the search continued for the remaining two. The Chief Minister ordered a special Disaster Management Force team deployed to the site.

The News Minute's separate account of the Kottapuzha/TK Colony flash flood near Pookkottumpadam named two dead, Parannaparamban Muhammad Kutty, 65, and Mangadan Anas, 26, and listed four additional missing people, including Sajitha, 26, who was reportedly washing clothes on the riverbank when she was swept away. The discrepancy in missing-person counts between outlets reflects how fluid the toll remained as search operations continued overnight.

In Kottayam, a landslide near Velathussery on the Erattupetta-Vagamon road killed Sangeetha Arul Lal, 35, a Chennai resident returning from a trip to Vagamon, according to NDTV and Mathrubhumi English. Mud trapped her scooter; her friend escaped with injuries and was hospitalized.

Casualty figures shifted through Sunday night as different agencies and outlets reported at different hours. The Times of India's initial video report put the toll at six. The News Minute's later update said four dead and four missing. NDTV, India Today and Mathrubhumi English, all citing the Chief Minister's Office, settled on five dead and two missing as of early Monday. The variation traces to which of the separate incidents—the Idukki shed, the Chokkad River flood, the Malappuram river sweep, and the Kottayam landslide—each outlet had confirmed at the time of publication, not to any single disputed fact.

Weather outlook and the safety question

The IMD upgraded alerts for Kottayam and Idukki from yellow to orange on Sunday, meaning 11 to 20 centimeters of rainfall was possible. Yellow alerts covering 6 to 11 centimeters remained in place for Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, Wayanad and Kannur, according to a summary carried by India TV News. The agency forecast heavy rain across parts of Kerala through Thursday, September 24, and warned of isolated thunderstorms.

Several tourists and locals were gathered at river spots, including the popular Kottapuzha river stretch and the Olarvattom Canal to T.K. Colony corridor, on a day when weather warnings were already active. The Times of India noted the incidents occurred on a holiday, when hundreds had gathered at Kettungal, Aanakkundu and other spots along the Koyipra foothills. None of the reporting indicates local authorities had closed these areas or issued specific warnings against river bathing before the flash floods hit. The search for two missing people in Malappuram was ongoing as of Monday morning, and post-mortem results from the Idukki shed deaths, including whether electrocution played a role, are expected once autopsies proceed Monday at Adimaly Taluk Hospital.
