Independent MP Helen Haines critically injured after car strikes her outside Wangaratta office, driver arrested

Independent MP Helen Haines critically injured after car strikes her outside Wangaratta office, driver arrested
Helen Haines, 65, the independent MP for Indi, was in critical condition on Monday, Oct. 19, after a Toyota Land Cruiser hit her outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, Victoria. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said it appeared deliberate, a 43-year-old driver was detained by bystanders and arrested, and the national counterterrorism team is investigating. Police have not stated a motive, and no charges have been announced.

A car struck Australian independent MP Helen Haines outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, Victoria, on the afternoon of Monday, Oct. 19. She was in critical condition in hospital.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the incident looks intentional. "This wasn't an accident. There was a deliberate act, it would appear. We don't know what the motivation is," he told the Australian Broadcasting Corp.

What police say happened

Victoria Police Acting Superintendent Ashley Mason said a white Toyota Land Cruiser hit Haines, 65, on Murphy Street, where her office sits. Bystanders detained the driver and handed him to police.

The driver is 43 and from the nearby town of Tarrawingee, police said. Officers found a knife inside the vehicle and seized it. Police said he will be interviewed. No charges have been announced.

Police have not said whether the driver and Haines knew each other. They said they are investigating whether the act was intentional.

Mason said police have no intelligence of any further threat to any other person or the wider community, and that investigators are treating the matter as an isolated incident.

Haines was taken to hospital with critical injuries. AAP reported she was due to be airlifted to Melbourne later Monday night for further treatment.

Counterterrorism team involved

Albanese said the national joint counterterrorism team is investigating alongside state authorities. That team includes the Australian Federal Police and the domestic spy agency ASIO.

He said he was not personally aware of any threats made against Haines. He also said it was too early to determine a motive.

Haines' family said in a statement that she "was involved in an incident outside her Wangaratta Electorate Office, and is receiving medical care." They thanked bystanders, health workers and police, and asked for privacy.

Who Haines is

Haines has held the regional seat of Indi since 2019. She spent three decades in rural health care as a nurse, midwife and academic before entering politics.

She won on a platform of political transparency and integrity. She worked with the Labor government to establish the National Anti-Corruption Commission, and has also championed climate action and regional housing.

Her path to Parliament was unusual. A grassroots community group ousted a senior conservative in 2013 with its own candidate, Catherine McGowan. McGowan retired in 2019, and the same group backed Haines. She was re-elected in 2022. Few non-major-party members win more than one election.

Albanese called her "a thoroughly decent human being, full of integrity, and respected right across the parliament." Opposition Leader Angus Taylor called it a "shocking day" and said: "Our nation cannot become a place where violent attacks are normalised."

Threats against politicians

Australian politicians have traditionally moved through public life with little or no security. The numbers on threats have been climbing.

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said police recorded 1,067 incidents of threatening or harassing behavior toward lawmakers in the past year, up from 951 the year before. AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett said in 2025 that threats against parliamentarians had doubled over three years.

Albanese pointed to social media. "People will say things that they would never say face to face. But the temperature has undoubtedly been increased," he said. He said there was "no question" social media played a part in a more polarized climate, and that there has been "too much shouting, not enough discourse."

Police have given no details of any social media link or prior threats in this case. Whether this attack fits that pattern is not established.

Albanese also said he does not want a political system where politicians cannot talk to people at the supermarket, in the street or at public forums.

The Inter-Parliamentary Union, which groups 183 national parliaments, published a survey in February in which 71% of respondents reported experiencing violence from the public, particularly online.

International context

In Britain, two serving MPs have been killed since 2016. Labour's Jo Cox was shot and stabbed by a far-right extremist that year, and Conservative David Amess was stabbed in 2021 by an attacker inspired by the Islamic State group.

In July, former politician Ann Widdecombe was found slain with a hammer at her home. A man has been charged with murder and terrorism-related offenses.

The driver is due to be interviewed by police, and prosecutors have not announced any charges. Investigators are working to establish the motive and whether the driver had any prior connection to Haines. Her medical condition remains critical.
