Hello Sunshine Reportedly Cuts About 30 Jobs, Half Its Staff, Weeks After Witherspoon Buyback

Hello Sunshine Reportedly Cuts About 30 Jobs, Half Its Staff, Weeks After Witherspoon Buyback
Reese Witherspoon and Mediawan bought Hello Sunshine back from Candle Media on Oct. 13 for a price a person familiar with the terms put at low to mid eight figures, against a $900 million valuation in 2021. Variety reports roughly 30 employees were laid off on Oct. 30 as the direct-to-consumer arm is dismantled. The company has not confirmed the numbers.

Reese Witherspoon owns a piece of Hello Sunshine again. About half the staff, by Variety's reporting, no longer works there.

Witherspoon and the Paris-based production group Mediawan announced on Tuesday, Oct. 13, that they were buying Hello Sunshine from Candle Media. Candle, backed by Blackstone, took a majority stake in 2021. Roughly two weeks later, on Friday, Oct. 30, reports surfaced that the company had laid off about 30 people.

The price

Neither Witherspoon nor Mediawan disclosed what they paid. A person familiar with the transaction told TheWrap the figure was "low to mid eight figures." At the top of that range, the deal would come to roughly $50 million.

Candle Media bought in at a $900 million valuation in 2021. On a $50 million price, the buyback would be about 94% below that mark. That math is TheWrap's estimate built on an anonymous source, not a disclosed number.

An individual close to Candle Media gave TheWrap a blunt assessment: "We were just wrong. This isn't a great deal in comparison to what we paid. It's not a great outcome for Blackstone." What either Blackstone or Candle actually lost depends on terms nobody has published.

The layoffs

Variety reported, citing multiple sources, that roughly 30 employees were cut, close to half the company. Hello Sunshine declined to comment to TheWrap and has not publicly confirmed how many people were affected.

The cuts reportedly gut the direct-to-consumer division. That unit tried to turn Witherspoon's audience into customers for lifestyle products, merchandise and other consumer ventures. Hello Sunshine had previously acquired the home-organization brand The Home Edit and launched the Gen Z-focused parenting brand Sunnie in 2025.

What remains is film and television, Reese's Book Club, social and digital marketing, and partnerships. The book club, launched in 2017, counts more than 6.2 million members, according to TheWrap. The latest cuts follow earlier workforce reductions under Candle Media's ownership.

What the new owners say

Witherspoon framed the deal as a return to basics. "Mediawan has built a global, independent studio by putting creators first. That has always been my vision for Hello Sunshine," she told Variety. She said she is investing alongside Mediawan and called the deal "a homecoming."

On Instagram she called it "a new chapter" and thanked Blackstone and Candle Media for their "partnership and unwavering support." Mediawan and Witherspoon said the arrangement would let Hello Sunshine explore broader storytelling formats and distribution models for global audiences.

Hello Sunshine co-founder Seth Rodsky is expected to join the board alongside Witherspoon and Mediawan representatives, according to the announcement coverage.

The argument for the restructuring is simple, and it comes from the company's own pitch: a production house known for "Big Little Lies," "The Morning Show" and "Little Fires Everywhere" does better concentrating on what built its reputation than on selling products. No one has publicly tied the layoffs to any other motive.

Who Hello Sunshine now sits beside

Mediawan, led by co-founder and CEO Pierre-Antoine Capton, runs nearly 100 labels that together produce more than 450 titles a year, per TheWrap. They include See-Saw Films, Margot Robbie's LuckyChap, Misfits Entertainment and Palomar. It also owns Brad Pitt's Plan B, acquired at the end of 2022, and The North Road Company, acquired in early 2026.

Hello Sunshine joins that group. Its credits also include "Daisy Jones & the Six," "From Scratch," "The Last Thing He Told Me" and "Where the Crawdads Sing."

What is still open

A $900 million valuation in 2021 and a reported eight-figure exit in 2026 is a steep gap for a company whose marquee shows kept running. The structure of the new deal, including how much Witherspoon invested personally and Mediawan's stake, has not been disclosed. Neither has the official layoff count, which Hello Sunshine has declined to confirm. Whether a leaner Hello Sunshine, back to film, TV and books, can justify even the reduced price is the question Mediawan now owns.
