ESPN's Matt Miller Goes on Indefinite Leave After Surgeries, Missouri AG Investigation Underway

The Medical Update

Matt Miller posted on X on July 10 that surgeries on his femur and patella were successful and that doctors were able to save his left leg. "To best focus on my healing and recovery, I'm stepping away indefinitely and will be placed on leave from ESPN," Miller wrote.

The crash that started all of this happened on June 17. According to KOAM News, Miller's 2023 Ford Bronco crossed the center line on Missouri Route 96 and struck a semi-truck. The semi's driver was not injured. Miller was airlifted to a hospital. On June 23, he disclosed publicly that he had undergone a life-saving amputation of his left arm, along with multiple fractures, a compound break of his left femur, a shattered kneecap, and multiple broken ribs.

The Friday update was the first confirmation that those subsequent surgeries were successful.

The Investigation

A Reddit thread titled "Matt Miller Leagues and Scam," posted May 21, 2026, went viral in the days after Miller's June 23 injury announcement. The thread detailed allegations from fantasy football league participants who claimed Miller never paid out promised winnings or charitable contributions from leagues he ran as commissioner.

Awful Announcing broke the story and subsequently reported hearing from over 40 additional individuals with similar accounts, many of whom submitted supporting evidence. The accusations cover more than withheld fantasy payouts. Miller has also been accused of failing to deliver paid scouting instruction he sold to aspiring NFL draft analysts.

According to Awful Announcing, Miller served as commissioner of 91 fantasy leagues on the platform Sleeper during the 2025 season alone, per his now-locked account on that platform.

In early July, the Missouri Attorney General's Office confirmed to Awful Announcing that it had opened a formal investigation into the allegations. No charges have been filed and no findings have been announced.

The GoFundMe Complication

When Miller's injuries became public in late June, his sister-in-law launched a GoFundMe to help cover medical costs. High-profile ESPN colleagues promoted it. Pat McAfee donated $5,525. Mel Kiper Jr. contributed $1,000. Mina Kimes and Adam Schefter also donated, according to On3.

The campaign raised more than $51,000 from 436 donors before being paused, according to NBC Sports. It was paused shortly after the fraud allegations exploded on social media. No one has publicly explained the reason for the pause.

The Fairness Question

The strongest case for Miller's defenders is straightforward: the man lost his arm, nearly lost his leg, and is fighting through one of the most physically devastating recoveries imaginable. The Reddit thread predates his accident by weeks, meaning its sudden virality was driven in part by the timing of his injury announcement, not necessarily by new evidence. Some of his supporters argue the pile-on is opportunistic, targeting someone who cannot fight back while hospitalized.

But over 40 individuals have separately contacted Awful Announcing with claims and supporting documentation. The Missouri AG's office confirmed an open investigation. The two realities exist simultaneously: a man in genuine medical crisis and a state investigation into his pre-accident conduct.

ESPN's Position

Awful Announcing reported that ESPN has indicated the leave is tied to Miller's medical condition. The network also told the outlet that, when appropriate, it plans to follow up internally on the social media allegations and prior reporting. ESPN is not treating the matter as closed.

Miller's statement on X did not reference the allegations in any way.

What Comes Next

The Missouri AG investigation has no publicly announced timeline. Miller's medical recovery from an amputation and major orthopedic surgeries will take months at minimum. Awful Announcing notes that his return to ESPN, even after he heals, will depend heavily on how the investigation is resolved. The paused GoFundMe and the question of what happens to the $51,000 already raised also remain open. No one from the campaign has publicly addressed whether donations will be refunded, held, or released.
