CME Launches Single-Stock Futures on Nvidia, SpaceX and 50-Plus Other Stocks, Trading Nearly 24 Hours a Day

CME Launches Single-Stock Futures on Nvidia, SpaceX and 50-Plus Other Stocks, Trading Nearly 24 Hours a Day
CME Group rolled out 77 single-stock futures contracts on Monday, letting traders bet on Nvidia, Apple, Tesla, SpaceX and dozens of other names almost around the clock, five days a week. It's leveraged, it's cheaper upfront than buying options, and it's exactly the kind of product that burns people who don't respect margin calls.

CME Group launched single-stock futures on more than 50 of the biggest US stocks on Monday, July 27. The contracts cover Apple, Nvidia, Tesla, Micron, Alphabet, Meta, Amazon, Pfizer, Walmart and, notably, SpaceX, following its 2026 stock market debut.

This is 77 contracts total. 55 standard-sized futures, each representing 100 shares of the underlying stock, plus 22 micro-sized contracts covering 10 shares apiece, according to CME Group's announcement.

CME first said on June 30 that it planned this launch, pending regulatory review. That review cleared, and the exchange pulled the trigger on the date it originally targeted.

Nearly 24 Hours a Day, Five Days a Week

The contracts trade on CME's Globex platform roughly 23 hours a day, from Sunday evening through Friday afternoon, with a one-hour daily maintenance break, according to CNBC. That's a massive expansion from the 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern window that governs regular US stock trading.

Earnings drop after the closing bell, geopolitical news breaks overnight, macro data hits before the open. Right now, options traders have to sit on their hands until the market reopens. These futures let them react the moment news hits.

Tim McCourt, CME Group's global head of equities, FX and alternative products, said the launch responds to trader demand. "Clients want to manage equity price risk with more precision and with the capital efficiencies of a centralized marketplace," McCourt said, according to Bitcoin News. He also said the product has "the ability to bring in a lot of new traders to our ecosystem," beyond CME's traditional institutional client base.

CME is working with more than 35 retail intermediary firms to distribute access, and Morgan Stanley analyst Michael Cyprys called it, in his own words reported by CNBC, "the year's largest retail growth catalyst," with those 35-plus retail partners targeting day-one and week-one readiness.

Cheaper Than Buying the Stock, But Still Leverage

Standard contracts represent 100 shares of the underlying stock; micro contracts represent 10 shares. They're cash-settled, meaning final settlement is based on the stock's official closing price at expiration, and they follow a quarterly expiration structure similar to CME's existing equity index futures.

CME says the contracts will be margined through SPAN, with minimum initial and maintenance margin for outright long or short positions set at 15% of notional value under CFTC and SEC rules, according to Startup Fortune's reporting on CME's own contract specifications. Compare that with buying the stock outright at 100% upfront capital, or a Reg T margin stock position at 50% upfront capital. That's a real difference in how much cash you need to put up front.

Unlike options, these contracts don't have time decay or shifting implied volatility working against you. Options have Greeks, theta bleeding positions every day they're held. Futures offer a cleaner directional bet.

Cleaner doesn't mean safe. Fifteen percent margin means a stock only needs to move against you by a fraction of that percentage before you're looking at a margin call. Leverage cuts both ways, and it cuts fast.

Shorting is also simpler here. In the regular stock market, shorting means locating shares, borrowing them, paying a borrow fee, and living with recall risk. In a futures contract, you just sell the future. No stock loan desk required.

Not Everyone Thinks This Goes Smoothly

Mat Cashman, principal for investor education at the Options Clearing Corp, raised a concern about overnight liquidity. Cashman said trading outside normal hours, "including during the volatile minutes after companies report earnings, can be choppy," according to Bitcoin News. Thin order books at 2 a.m. Eastern are a different animal than thick order books at 10 a.m. when everyone's watching.

When you're trading a leveraged product outside regular hours with fewer participants, prices can gap violently on thin volume. If you're using leverage in that environment and get caught on the wrong side of a gap, the damage compounds fast.

Single-stock futures aren't new to America. They're a comeback story. OneChicago, a joint venture between CME, Cboe Global Markets and Interactive Brokers, ran security futures for nearly two decades before shutting down in September 2020 citing thin demand. This time, CME is betting the SpaceX IPO frenzy, near-24/7 crypto-style trading culture, and retail brokers hungry for a new product will produce a different outcome.

CME also flagged the bigger competitive picture. Overseas exchanges have been rolling out perpetual futures, contracts with no expiration date, on stocks like SpaceX ahead of its official listing. Platforms such as Hyperliquid offer these "perps" even though they're not currently legal in the US. The CFTC already gave CME, Kalshi and Coinbase the green light this year to offer crypto-related perpetual futures, a move widely read as a preview of eventual approval for equity perps too.

CME said it may expand the lineup beyond the initial 55 stocks depending on customer demand and its own listing standards. Whether retail traders treat these contracts as a smarter hedging tool or a faster way to blow up an account overnight is the open question nobody, including CME, can answer yet.
